personality
Sarah is not disorganized; she's too paranoid to ever allow that. No, she's very meticulous and takes extreme precaution whenever making any decision. It's likely part of the reason she hasn't been caught yet, along with Macbeth's help. It worries her that the voice in her head has yet to have a name known to her, but she can deal with it because he gives good advice. That being said, she can't always expect to have perfect control. Sarah is still human and still a victim, so she tends to be a litle jumpy around men she doesn't know that aren't criminals to her knowledge. If a man she doesn't know brushes up against her or touches her a different way, whether or not it was accidental, she tends to react violently. Of course, she won't really stab them in the chest outright, but she can pull away and punch/smack a guy pretty easily. Gaining respect for a man is not easy for her, especially since men in college these days are not exactly worthy of respect.
Sarah isn't shy persay, but it's difficult for her to make friends because she never really has before. All the friends she has now have come up and invoked a conversation with her, and obviously found her company enjoyable. Most of them being girls, of course. Though, she tends to be the quiet one of the bunch, considering the things she says sometimes are a little too dark and cynical for most people's liking. That doesn't mean that she can't crack/take a joke every once in a while, but her humor is very sarcastic, and silly things tend to be lost on her. She attempts to come off as likeable, though, in order to not raise suspicion. You know the phrase "Watch out for the quiet ones"? Yeah, that's Sarah.
She's unlikely to forget a wrong someone has done her, though, and will hold a grudge. Sarah never plans revenge, of course, because the only people she needs to take revenge on are creeps and criminals, but she will be mad and you will likely know it when she refuses to speak to you. Honestly, she wouldn't care less if most of her friend's were mad at her or not, if she was still safe from any suspicion at all.
Sarah has chosen her career path well, considering she wants to be a profiler or a criminal psychologist or something of the like. She's very good at reading people, whether it be by thier mannerisms or what they're wearing or what they say. She's very observant and can pick up the tiniest bit of body language, sometimes with Macbeth's help. Not many people can trick her, but she can trick them if they don't have her ability. Sarah's a decent liar and can trick anyone with less reading skills than she has.
What she doesn't know is that she suffers from a form of post traumatic stress disorder, which causes her violent outbreaks and jumpy behavior. Macbeth has nothing to do with that. He doesn't have anything to do with the fact that she cannot have any intimate moments with a man without her mind jumping back to that house on the outskirts of town and that vile man. He has nothing to do with the fact that she can hardly get a date because of her violent nature and distrust of men. That's all her, and all from her experiences, not Macbeth's.
past Sarah Bethany Macguire used to be normal. She was one of those boring types; she never appeared in rumors, went to parties, etc. And she wasn't one to rebel, either. Alistair and Janet were perfectly happy with this, though; in fact, they were very proud of her being one of the brightest and well-behaved teenagers in her school, so a teacher once told them. Of course, Sarah wasn't exactly sure how she felt about that, considering she didn't have many friends, let alone a boyfriend. She was made fun of for it, too. As much as she tried to stay invisible, there were times when she would be bullied for being herself.
But she could take it, and did for nearly three years. The end of her junior year was the snapping point. Some boy had been nice and invited her to a club, and she decided to go, borrowing a dress from her mother and doing her makeup like she saw in a magazine. Honestly, she looked a little dark, but she didn't know and she didn't mind either way. Not once did she have second thoughts after climbing out of her window and making her way to the boy's house. He was driving her there and providing a fake ID. It was a long drive, since there weren't any nightclubs in Duncan.
She lost the boy as soon as they got to the dancefloor. After a few drinks, she wondered why she had never done this before. It was great to finally experience what she had been missing for so long, or at least, she thought so. Sarah was too drunk to really know much of anything after a while. Someone even bought her a drink, her last drink at that club.
Sarah didn't feel well, so she decided to leave and wait for the boy to drive her home. But he was busy with another girl, and someone else came along beforehand. It was one of her teachers, Mr. Malcolm. He was young, but not very attractive in popular opinion, though he acted like it sometimes. He offered her a ride, and Sarah with her impaired judgement due to a spiked drink, agreed.
He didn't bring her to her home, though. No, this was way too good of an opportunity to pass up for him. Mr. Malcolm gave her a pill and said it would make her feel better, and Sarah, feeling horrible and still not thinking clearly, took it.
The next few hours were a blur.
He had driven back to Duncan, yes, but to his home near the outskirts of town. The man practically had to carry the heavily drugged girl inside and lock the doors. Malcolm woke her up enough to half-saunter down the stairs to the basement, but she was pretty out of it again as soon as she found the bed that was down there, making it easy for the teacher to tie her to it.
Sarah was still awake, but not really able to put up much of a fight, when he raped her. She was aware it was happening, but unable to stop it. And she remembered it when the drugs wore off and she finally fell asleep, after he was long gone.
This lasted for a day or two, then he decided to let her leave the basement at certain times. Of course, he had the doors to the house locked from the inside and a gun to shoot any escape ideas, but at least it was a little freedom. A little. He made her cook and clean and care for his dog for him, sometimes getting violent when she wasn't doing well enough. He made her wear clothes that no way could have ever belonged to a man, which was the least of her worries. She wasn't stupid, though, and was busy formulating a plan. The plan wasn't desirable, but she had been in hell way too long and it was time to get back.
So she came onto him one day, knowing he kept the key to the front door in his shirt pocket and his gun on the table next to him. Mr. Malcolm tended to blast music at most times of the day, and the music hid the sound of her sliding the gun off the other end of the table and he wasn't exactly in the right mindset to notice her hand was actually slipping the key out of his pocket. And when she said she was going to slip into something more acceptable, she was actually slipping out the front door. When he realized what was happening, it was too late. Sarah had already ran into the nearest police station in town.
Donald Malcom was arrested almost immediately, and soon after that he hired the best lawyer in southern Missouri. The trial lasted almost a year, well into Sarah's senior year of high school. To Sarah, it should have been an obvious verdict, but the lawyer had used the fact that she had snuck out and went to a club to turn the jury against her. Then, Mr. Malcolm said that she was willingly there for two weeks, that the restraints on the bed in the basement were her idea, that all her bruises and the gun were part of some sick fantasy created by Sarah, and she panicked when he threatened to tell everyone. It infuriated her to no end.
And on the last day that Sarah sat in that courtroom, the jury came back with a verdict of not-guilty for sexual assault, only minor statutory rape charges that were appealed soon after.
People started to look at Sarah in a different way after that, wondering just how she was a straight A student. Even the few friends she had before abandoned her. She never really saw/noticed the boy who had taken her to the club in the first place again.
Due to the charges and parent requests, Donald Malcolm was fired from his teaching job, which he was pretty upset about.
But that wasn't enough for Sarah.
No, she wanted him to suffer. Pay for what he had done in a way that she deemed as true justice. She had pictured just what she would do dozens of times, but never had the courage to actually do it.
Until he sat in a car outside the high school on her last day and had the nerve to smile and wave at her. That was the breaking point that allowed someone to take control of Sarah, act as her conscience. Macbeth never told her who he was, exactly, but he's the one who convinced her to do it, just as his Lady had convinced him to murder the king. No one should have power over you. You can't allow fate to decide who would rule; you have to take control of your fate in order to take control.
And so, the day before she left for New York to attend Barrie University, she went to that house on the outskirts of town with a knife, and stabbed him three times while he was asleep, leaving no fingerprints on the knife by using gloves, then placing the knife on someone who was fervently against freeing Malcolm during her trial. In fact, he had done an interview for the News saying that he should have gotten the death penalty. That man was charged with the murder of Donald Malcolm.
A lot of people were suspicious of the truth, but no one came forward with those suspicions. Sarah was free to go to New York City.
present
Sarah had been accepted into Barrie University before the incident, and they had not been informed of it because it wasn't important. Her parents don't call, or write, or really have admitted that they miss her, partially because they're afraid of her. When she first killed a man, something inside her broke, and she needed more. Though, she wouldn't kill just anybody, and not really willingly either. Macbeth convinced Sarah that she is obligated to kill other rapists and pedophiles and things of that nature, and anyone who gets in her way or attempts to stop her. So she's become an unintentional vigilante of sorts, and she doesn't like it. Because the only reason she does it is because there are certain things these people do that make her think of Donald Malcolm, and thinking of that makes her go back to those moments of fear when she was being abused, then the intense feeling of relief when the abuser was dead.
That being said, it's not all she does. Now, Sarah is a Senior at Barrie, double majoring in Psychology and Criminology. It was something she was only considering beforehand, but now it's rather interesting to her. She often compares herself to other murderers psychologically, and her findings make her happy. Because the murderers they talk about in her class most often are ones who were caught and convicted. Sarah, on the other hand, is neither. She plans on becoming a profiler like on Criminal Minds, not considering her being caught. No, Sarah never thinks of getting caught, because how could she when she takes extra precautions? And even so, if the justice system is the same as it was for David Malcolm's trial, she should be not-guilty.
family
Alistair Macguire ; Father. Appears to dislike/have disowned his daughter, when really he just doesn't know how to deal with her, and is a little afraid of her. Lives in Duncan.
Janet Macguire ; Mother. Misses Sarah and still loves her, but is also a little afraid and concerned.
likes
- Shakespeare. Him and Edgar Allen Poe are really the only writers Sarah can really connect with.
- Knives. That's her M.O. She never kills any other way.
- Other people like her. If only just to confide in them, but she's also interested in the psychology of other killers so she can compare.
- Quiet. Any kind, really. She likes to relax with no music on.
- Psychological profiling. It's fascinating how much profilers can tell about people, which is why she wants to be one, ironically.
dislikes
- The voice. Though she doesn't know who he is, Sarah doesn't like him if only because somewhere, deep down, she doesn't want to kill. That doesn't mean she doesn't listen, though. He can be quite convincing.
- Guns. They give people an advantage and a superiority factor that she doesn't think is fair.
- Pedophiles/Rapists/Other creeps. Only men in this category. It's kind of a given, because who would really like them? But, Sarah really doesn't like them and will kill them to keep girls from having to go through what she did.
- Flashbacking. It happens at the worst of times. She's found she can't even have... intimate relations with men without going completely psychotic and likely lashing out violently.
- Dogs. Just a small thing. He had a dog, after all, so.

book title The Tradgedy of Macbeth
backstory Macbeth is the title character, if you couldn't tell. One day, after a war victory by Macbeth, these three witches tell of a prophecy in which Macbeth becomes king of Scotland. His friend Banquo would not be a king himself, but will father a royal bloodline. Macbeth tells this to his lady, and she hatches a plan. Duncan, the current king, is staying at casa Macbeth, and Lady Macbeth wants to murder him. At first, Macbeth isn't too sure about this, but Lady convinces him by bringing up his manhood, which, as all girls know, is a touchy subject for menfolk. After he does it, Lady frames Duncan's servants. Macbeth murders them, though, just to be sure they won't prove their innocence. Duncan's sons flee and are considered suspects, Macbeth is crowned King and all is well.
Keep in mind this is a Shakespearian tradgedy. Macbeth has had a taste of blood, and can't seem to return to sanity.
Macbeth's friend Banquo isn't all that sure about Macbeth anymore, and Macbeth knows it. So he hires assassins to kill Banquo and his son, which only succeeds in taking out the former. Fleance escapes. Later that night, the Macbeths throw a party and Banquo's ghosts shows up, but only to Macbeth, causing him to rage and bitch to nothing. The lords they invited leave, thinking he's crazy.
A bit ruffled up, Macbeth visits the Three Witches again, and this time they tell him to watch out for that Macduff fella who discovered Duncan's corpse and was wary of Macbeth from the beginning, and that he would not be defeated by someone woman born. Still paranoid and murderous, he takes out Macduff's whole family while he is exiled in England. Which was not a good idea, not at all.
Many now consider Macbeth a tyrant, especially Macduff, who is none too pleased with the slaughter of his family. Lady Macbeth has died, committted suicide, whatever. A battle eventually happens, and Macbeth gets an ego and brags that he can't die by Macduff's hand because he was born by a woman, duh. Unfortunatley for him, Macduff wasn't naturally born, but his momma had a C-section. Macbeth realizes his mistake too late, and Macduff beheads Macbeth.
