That frackin' fairy had a death wish. If Rory could ever find a way to permanently shut up the voice that was always cheerfully chirping her insight in her head, then it would be done. But no. This stupid 'good fairy' was constantly chattering, and when she was excited enough, managed to take over Rory's actions and sway her towards places and people she would never approach.
Which was how Rory found herself walking towards the jewelry store, hoping that the fairy would just be content with just window-shopping. But no. The moment they reached the front of the door, Rory found that her feet were basically no longer her own and she was propelled inside the store. Daggon that stupid fairy. Whenever Rory wanted total control of her own body, the fairy just had to have her way.
Once inside, Rory took a quick once-over of the store itself, making sure that she hadn't stumbled across some sketchy little shop that would have employees who caused nightmares for little children. Not that the fairy would ever let Rory go somewhere like that. Not that Rory even wanted to visit a place like that. But the fairy was easily distracted by shiny things, which the window had been full of.
But this place seemed okay. The merchandise was color-coded, almost in a rainbow around the counters, which was a sort of cute idea. Immediately, the good fairy was drawn to basically every item of jewelry in the store, but Rory was able to calm her down enough to focus on one color. So they headed for the purple.
It was Rory's favorite color, and she always thought that amethyst was such a pretty gemstone. Emerald was okay, seeing as it was her birthstone and Rory figured she had to have some sort of feelings for it. But green had never really been her color.
The fairy was practically spazzing out in her head from all the pretty jewelry pieces. There were necklaces, earrings, bracelets, rings. Well, Rory was drawing a strict line when it came to jewelry, that was certain. She wasn't going to go crazy and waste money on trinkets she'd never wear and would simply linger in her accessories drawer back at Baum. No, that wasn't happening.
And yet, there was this gorgeous necklace that had caught Rory's eye. Heart-shaped and small, it was almost perfect. But she couldn't afford it.
"But it's perfect," the fairy was whispering, even in her head. "We have to get it."
With a sigh, Rory glanced up and saw the employee standing at another counter. Maybe they had a payment plan? "Excuse me, miss?" Rory called, hoping the employee wasn't having a bad day. That was the last thing she needed. An employee who was annoyed and didn't want to be at work. Then again, who ever wanted to be at work? If work was supposed to be enjoyable, then they would have called it 'fun'.
Well, some people did call work fun. But that wasn't the point. When the employee came over, Rory forced a smile. She wasn't a people person, but she could definitely fake it. And being polite never hurt anyone. "Hi there. I was wondering how much that necklace cost?" Rory asked, pointing to the piece in the display case.

Julie Hassall didn’t settle down at just any job.
She quit at fast food places after a month. She lasted at a Forever 21 for two months. It took two weeks for her to end it at a record store. The only reason Julie still worked at Third Time’s The Charm was because she loved it.
The jewelry was organized by color, the coworkers were fun without being annoying, it was close to home, the uniform wasn’t horrible, and she got the best discounts. She’d been there for three and a half years. She took shifts if someone needed the day off. She made the biggest sales. It was no surprise that she’d been made the assistant manager. Julie was strangely polite while working. Normally, she was selfish and sneaky. Normally, she wanted something out of everything. (Then again, making sales meant more money for her. Not that anybody would know anything about that. Hush.)
Today was slow. Julie had taken to sorting and re-sorting the jewelry, going from color to color. She spent more time at green because it was her favorite of all colors. She definitely hung around the seashell jewelry for awhile. It had been her idea to add this little corner to the shop. She spent most of her money on the necklaces and rings, the earrings and bracelets. Sometimes, Julie spent half of her check the moment it’d been deposited on seashell jewelry she’d had her eye on. It was a bad habit that didn’t need breaking.
Julie returned to the counter and cleaned it up. There were extra receipts lying about, rings that needed to be put away, and it was driving her insane. Had a customer just not called for her, she would have cleaned up. Brushing her hands against her jeans, Julie approached the woman and smiled easily. “It’s Julie. ” Never mind that her name tag already made that clear. Moving closer to the display, Julie peered at the necklace the woman was pointing to.
“Ah, that gorgeous little gem is going for twenty dollars.” Julie had always thought the prices here to be entirely reasonable. Looking back to the woman, Julie tilted her head and stared at her for a moment. “ This is your first time here, isn’t it?” Smiling, Julie moved to take the necklace from the case. “ I think discounts for first timers are key.” And Julie knew this woman was new; Julie remembered all of her customer’s faces, at least a little bit. “ Speaking of keys, we do have a line based entirely off them. They are quite pretty. If you like that sort of jewelry.” words: 438 outfit: here!notes: rules! [/blockquote]

Julie. Rory could remember that. It was a nice name, simple. Something that you could hear everyday and not be too struck by the abnormality of it. "Now, Memory," the fairy was saying, though Rory was attempting to block her out. "Your name is beautiful. You must stop acting like this."
They tended to have that argument a lot, over how much Rory disliked her full name. But then again, her mother had been absolutely crazy to give her such a name. Who named their child Memory?
Rory turned her attention back to the store's employee, glancing down at the purple jeweled necklace as she was given a price. Only twenty dollars? It was a steal for such a beautiful piece. And how that they knew it was a reasonable price point for Rory, the brunette knew she'd have a hard time denying the idea of buying it. The fairy was going to get her way in the end.
Realizing the woman had spoken to her in a conversational way that was expecting a response, Rory quickly brought herself to attention. "Umm, yes, I am a new customer," she managed to stammer, getting a proper scolding in her head from the fairy for acting like an imbecile. Well, what was she supposed to do? She hadn't been expecting that. And then the other dark-haired woman was telling her about key jewelry and new customer discounts.
It was all getting rather confusing, to tell you the truth. But Rory was trying her best to keep up. It didn't help that the fairy was rattling off points on how to be presentable in her head. Sometimes she just wouldn't shut up...
"Umm, no, I've never really been into keys myself," Rory admitted, giving the woman -- Julie another smile. "But my older sister told me that she's been liking the idea. Her birthday is coming up, so I suppose it'd be a good idea to look into getting her something. Could I possibly see some of them?"
Alas, it was a little bit of a lie. Nicolette had practically been shoving it down Rory's throat every time she called her elder sister that the key jewelry pieces were "just so adorable" and how she "would love to get one for my birthday, hint hint!" Yes, Nicolette was not a subtle person, especially when it came to something she wanted.
So it wasn't too big of a deal to get her key jewelry. After all, it was her sister.
