personality
William Dart isn’t the sort of man one expects to become a businessman. Sullen, brooding, and reserved, he prefers not to make new acquaintances, and would rather keep to himself at home. He isn’t the best at networking, that being said, and some people might say it’s a wonder that his family business stays in business. However, his father’s good name, and the necessity of the hotel’s services, keep it in the black. He mostly does paperwork and such, staying involved behind the scene, which is just the way he likes it. He doesn’t like having attention in person; he just likes people to respect him without actually bothering him with their appearance.
When he does have to interact with people he doesn’t know, he is usually detached, and sometimes even condescending, depending on how difficult they are to deal with. (Honestly, what is so impossible to understand about compiling the reviews of the last few months?) He is very judgmental, and though that’s something he’s been working on since he became awakened and realized how much Elizabeth changed him, he can’t help it if some people are just stupid and ignorant. Around some people, however, he is just worried that they are going to think badly of him, since he is so conscious of his reputation, and that makes him more aloof and has the opposite effect of his intentions. One might even call his stiffness and inability to relate to some people awkwardness, though not in the gawky teenager kind of way, more in the… I’ve-gotten-my-way-most-of-my-life-and-I-don’t-know-how-to-understand-you-and-make-you-like-me kind of way. Case in point: the memory that he told Elizabeth she must allow him to tell her that he loved her. He likes telling people what to do if they get too close, and would prefer if they just stayed away.
There are some people to whom he is not a stranger, and to those people, he is intensely loyal, even affectionate. With his sister, in private, he is a sweet, gentle, protective older brother. With his best friend, he will do everything to secure his happiness, even if it is contrary to what his friend thinks is best. He always thinks he is right, of course, but his stubbornness regarding that also applies to how adamantly he looks after the well-being of his friends and family. Beneath a seemingly cold exterior, he is a very passionate person. He will put himself on the line for the sake of helping those he cares about, and can be just as extremely generous as his parents if the need arises. Though he wants to be respected, he does his good deeds in secret. And while he is proud and stubborn, he is not above reproach, at least when it comes to Elizabeth.
past
Born in the best London hospital, William Dart was the firstborn son to William Dart and his wife Anne. The happy couple took their baby boy home to a secluded and grand old estate. They were well-known not only for their old family and old money, but for their charity and accessibility. They hosted lavish parties throughout William’s childhood, but he was always a quiet child who kept to himself and was perhaps too attached to his mother. He was raised with principles, but spoiled terribly; though he was taught what was right and often did it, this gave him an enormous sense of pride and holier-than-thou attitude of which he was not cured for far too long (and it still exists, to a degree).
Were it not for the birth of his younger sister, he might not have had any responsibility at all. He took it upon himself to protect her after his mother died, and his father, who had initially managed his hotel company from home so he might spend more time with his family, began to travel more because being at home made the sad memories of his late wife too strong. Unfortunately, William was not able to completely protect his sister from the boy who had lived close to them all their lives. The boy had been close to William’s father, but when the man was gone, he became reckless. William’s sister fell in love with him, ignorant that the boy just wanted her money. They would have done something foolish, had William not paid him off to go away, which the scoundrel did.
After staying in the same house his whole life, he left to go to university at Oxford. It was more of a formality, even a precaution, than anything else, since they were wealthy enough to never work. Though he did not bother getting involved in any student organizations, he met his best friend there, and they got along famously. No one expected Dart to ever make any friends, but so he did – someone the complete complement to him, as opposite as they were. They became very close, along with the rest of his friend’s family, especially one of his sisters. But William never thought much about dating; most women flung themselves at him for his money, and he found them simpering and irksome.
William moved to New York City after university to manage his father’s hotel after the senior William Dart passed away unexpectedly. He intended to leave his sister at home in England where she might be comfortable and finish school, but she is sixteen now and can make her own decisions.
present
Even though he is not physically close to her all the time, William remains very close to his sister. Nearly every day, he calls her – even though he hates talking on the phone to anyone else. He and his sister go back and forth between England and New York frequently and have grown accustomed to traveling. For the past few years, he has spent most of his time in NYC, but he has not had to work too much, since his father was a wise man and made the hotel relatively self-sufficient. The Dart family has always been well-off. If Darcy wished, he could sell the hotel chain for billions, but he feels somewhat obligated to take care of it, since it was his father’s. He resents it somewhat for taking him away from his sister, but he’s the sort of man who thinks if he wants something done right, he has to do it himself, and he would not want to see the family name sullied by some idiot.
When he isn’t working, he spends every minute he can at their family home in England. Now that he is “awakened,” he understands fully why he is so attached to it. It is hard from him to be away from there, or away from his sister, and it is also difficult to be separated from the woman he loves. He thought that things had been mended between them, and his unrequited desire for her would no longer be a torment, but alas, even after everything they had gone through, he lives again without her. He would prefer it if he weren’t awakened, or at least if he weren’t in love with Elizabeth, so that he would not feel this longing he could not satisfy. He was first awakened when he saw her - he doesn't even know her name here - and everything came flooding back to him. He heard a rumor of uncertain validity that she is traveling with her aunt and uncle in New York, and he intends to find her – to see if she is awakened as well, or if she can be… or if all hope is lost forever.

backstory
(This is a quick and crummy summary of a really wonderful book!)
Darcy was sort of the antagonist-turned-protagonist of the story. He initially insulted Elizabeth by saying she wasn’t pretty enough for him to dance with, and refusing to dance with anyone. But he was the best friend of Bingley, the man who Elizabeth’s sister Jane was falling in love with. That was, until they all moved away suddenly. It turned out that Darcy was one of the people who had convinced Bingley to leave Jane because she wasn’t good enough for him. Elizabeth had also met a man named Wickham who claimed that Darcy had been cruel to them during their childhood. When Elizabeth was visiting a friend, she came across Mr. Darcy again – and he proposed to her! She turned him down because he had been arrogant and insulting, but the next day, he handed her a letter explaining himself – that Wickham was a liar and a scoundrel, and more or less that he was sorry for getting between Jane and Bingley.
Even though Darcy had thought Bingley was too good for Jane, his own feelings about Elizabeth overcame the difference in their wealth. The next time he saw her was at his home, unexpectedly, as she was on a tour of it with her aunt and uncle. He took them out to dinner, and then fishing. Elizabeth learned more about Darcy’s home and family, including his sister, Georgiana. But they had to leave suddenly when they learned that Elizabeth’s sister Lydia had run away with Wickham. Both Elizabeth and Darcy lamented that they had not prevented it, but Darcy, in secret, did the only thing he could, which was to provide the money for Lydia and Wickham to have a proper marriage. He also told Bingley that he should marry Jane, the next time they went to Hertfordshire, only to leave shortly afterward, because he could not be around the woman he loved thinking that she could not love him back.
But when his pretentious aunt heard a rumor that Lizzie was engaged to Darcy and asked her to promise not to marry him, Lizzie said she would make no such promise, and gave Darcy hope that she might love him after all. He returned to see how she felt for him, and eventually learned that they loved each other. This surprised everyone, especially Lizzie’s father, to whom she had expressed her dislike of Darcy multiple times before. But her feelings had changed, and so they were married, and went to live happily at Pemberley with Georgiana.

rp sample Elizabeth checked her reflection in the fine mirror once more before descending the staircase to examine the dining room table where in mere moments, the entire united households of Pemberley and Netherfield were to be joined. It had been far too long since she had seen Bingley and her sister, and she was going to very much enjoy having dinner with them. She sincerely hoped that they would stay afterward, since it was unfathomable that they would endure such a long ride from Netherfield to Pemberley just to stay for a few hours during a four course meal. After all, there were plenty of spare rooms in the place, and it was certain that Darcy would not mind having Bingley and Jane stay with them; it seemed like it was something that they owed to them, since for a good long time, Darcy had stayed with Bingley’s family at Netherfield (and Elizabeth was exceedingly glad of this).
Though she had never been one to go rushing around in preparations, fretting over the smallest detail, especially for her dear sister, she did have responsibilities as the mistress of a home as great as Pemberley, which she was becoming accustomed to (rather slowly, she had to admit, to her embarrassment and the unsaid anger of many of the servants who in all likelihood knew how to run the place better than she did). It was a large adjustment for her to make, going from her father’s relatively modest home to the splendor of Pemberley, especially since she hadn’t even had to run Longbourn – but then, she had had a hand in it, since Mrs. Bennet was unable to do much most of the time on account of her nerves troubling her. In any case, this was quite different, and she hoped that tonight, she would be able to showcase her abilities as hostess.
This was a practice of sorts for when she would have to hold elegant dinner parties at Pemberley for the elite of London and Derbyshire society. She was glad that this test would be performed on Bingley and her sister. Her sister and Bingley were both so kind that they would not mention it if she made a few mistakes, but Bingley knew well enough of polite society to know the difference. Of course, her dear husband was going to be of some use, as well. She had not forgotten him in the preparations – at least, not entirely – but her mind had been quite occupied. When she saw him descending the staircase, looking as handsome as ever, she couldn’t help but smile to herself and issue a little sigh of happiness. She never dreamed that she would be married to such a man. “Mr. Darcy,” she greeted him with a wide smile and a bob of the head, “I do believe our guests should be arriving within the hour. I hope you are prepared to receive them.” She stretched up on her toes to give her husband a gentle kiss, relishing the last moment of solitude they were to have for a while, but rejoicing at the chance to see her sister and brother-in-law once more.
