personality
Sheltered&(supposedly)Innocent&Good-Natured:
Teegan grew up in an extremely religious family. She was always told, no, commanded, to keep her convictions and morals rock solid. This meant going to church every Sunday, no swearing, no raising her voice at adults, and the like.
This also meant that Teegan hardly ever experienced a world outside her tight knit family and family friends. She never was allowed to listen to secular music, or read books or watch movies her parent’s didn’t approve of. Teegan’s parents did whatever they could to keep Teegan from finding out about the evil and sadness of the world, and she more often than not didn’t question it. She stems from a family of severe traditional values.
The place she lived, a small island off the East coast, didn’t have many children her own age living there, so Teegan never felt pressure to conform, or paradoxically, to rebel. To her, not knowing what sex was or that the Easter Bunny wasn’t real until age 13 or older was normal. She never had anyone criticize her for her innocence; her parents condoned and cultivated it.
Because of the tragedy that occurred early in her childhood, Teegan desperately clings to her childlike innocence, because she believes it will help her sane, and reminds her of her old way of life, the old good thing about her life currently. If she doesn't remember it, it might not have happened...right?
Polite&Quiet&Submissive:
Teegan was always a soft-spoken child, and was encouraged to remain that way into her teenager years. She has a strong sense of respect for every living thing, after all, God created it; therefore she must try her best to treat everyone equally and kindly.
Not that she, or anyone really could do this all the time, however, Teegan was always told to bite her tongue when she disagreed with or disliked someone, so she often did. She had her moments, but she was always the first to apologize in a tense situation.
Always being guided and shadowed by her parents, Teegan hardly developed any of her own opinions. She finds it hard to take a stance on most issues (she doesn’t want to start conflict) and often reverts to a submissive, congenial attitude when talking with anyone. This of course, strikes more and more nerves with her now that she is older—she too often bottles up her emotions and feelings. She feels like she is imprisoning herself, but it is her only nature, the only way she knows how to socialize. Spineless could be a word used to describe her; especially when it comes to her guilty conscious.
Artistic&Free-spirited:
Teegan always appreciated the arts, loving to paint, draw and write at times herself. But she often felt as if her work was missing something; she had not been exposed to many other aesthetic or written creations other than her own.
She also loved exploring as a child, running around the small island with its beaches and shops, taking in every sight and smell there was to experience.
Since Teegan never came in contact with many other children her age, at least of the judgmental variety, she’s always been relatively secure with herself. She doesn’t mind that she is different, though at times she can be uncomfortable interacting with those drastically different than her.
Disturbed&Self Consumed&Forgetful:
Teegan gets lost in her own head. She truly believes she has a mental disorder. She lets guilt eat her alive; any mistake she makes, big or small, puts her through hell and back. She goes through bouts of depression and isolation, trying to rely on her juxtaposing innocence to bring her back to life.
Teegan has trouble remembering things, and too often things she is making up memories when in reality, they are Annabel's mixing with her own. She also has random bouts of lust and fantasy, which she struggles with because she believes they are sinful. Though they aren't particularly dirty, childlike Teegan tries to convince herself that she is too young and too immature for boys. And besides, the first time she was "in love" didn't turn out so well.
past
There was something strange about Teegan’s babysitter.
Seri was a woman with the striking looks of an angel—beautiful, bright blue eyes, and hair like spun gold. She was young, talented— and more than anything wanted to get out of the small town of Emerald Isle.
She was friendly to everyone, and a regular Church goer, so naturally a long lasting friend of the Axelsson family. She had a part time job at one of the seafood restaurants on the dock, a favored waitress that served the regulars with a killer smile and sometimes, a free taste of the catch of the day.
When she and Teegan were alone, however, the smile was gone, the demon came out. At least, in Teegan’s memory that her parents tried so hard to misconstrue and reconstruct.
She was only 8 years old.
“Your hair is so pretty, Teegan. I wish I had hair like yours,” Yank. Her scalp burned.
“Your eyes are so bright, Teegan. I wish I had eyes like yours.” Two claw marks appeared above her eyes.
“Your skin is so clear, Teegan. I want skin like yours.” Little burn marks, up and down her limbs.
“You’re so young Teegan. I wish I could be as young as you again. You...you have so much life left in you, so much more than me. Let’s go play on the beach.”
She remembered it so vividly, for being so young at the time. Lungs burning, mouth closing and opening and gasping. Her hair was wrenched back and forth as her head was forced in and out of the tide, tiny purpled face slapped against the sand in intervals. Then she was clutched against Seri’s chest in a tight hug.
“I’d never drown you, Teegan. You’re far too pretty; you’re far too young, just yet.”
It was always a believable excuse, as Teegan ran around so much as a child. She had always just tripped on the docks, or misbehaved and touched the stove while Seri was making dinner, despite receiving repeated warnings. Seri was too good of a person, too religious of a person, to ever harm a child.
And then it happened. Teegan fell in love. She was in 5th grade at the time.
His name was Cyril, a boy with a crooked smile, thick glasses, and thick mousy brown hair that was constantly matted to his forehead due to its repeated contact with the sea salt. They shared a love of adventure, a love of their town. They played and splashed in the sea, made bug eyes at the restaurant owners to receive handouts. He even kissed her once, on the cheek, behind the old lighthouse.
His family was new to Emerald Isle, so of course when asked, Mr. and Mrs. Axelsson recommended Seri to babysit him when his parents were at work. The presence of Cyril during the torture made it easier to bear, and her visits with him to the beach, when they were alone, renewed and created good memories of the shore. But Teegan didn’t want Cyril to experience Seri’s “compliments”.
She tried to protect him. She really did. But he just wasn’t as pretty to Seri as she was.
She closed her eyes, crying, curling into the fetal position on the sand. She tried to cover her ears, but she heard the noises. The splashing and sputtering and shrieks. She could almost feel as if she was the one in the water, being held under by those brutally strong arms. She felt her own lungs give out and she breathed in the water for her friend, her love, Cyril.
“It’s all done now,” Seri had whispered, her words causing Teegan’s flesh and very being to swelter and sway like the disorderly waves.
“Only the pretty ones like us. Only the ones who create the jealous. Don’t say a word, you hear me? If you don’t want to meet the angels you should never say anything.”
Teegan retched onto the sand.***
She saw him sometimes, she was sure of it. After Seri moved off of the island. Outside her window, inside her room, on the shore, building sandcastles.
“Come build with me, Teegan! We’ll build an even bigger castle than last time!” He’d smile and beckon her, but she’d only cry and swell with fear and confusion.
“I can’t,” she’d sob, turning in the opposite direction.
“Why not?” A voice as faint and weak as the seasonal breeze. Then he’d be gone.
She could only hope she wasn’t crazy. She hadn’t been the one drowned that day—she thought. Yes, Cyril had. Sometimes she didn’t know for sure.
Whether or not an attempt on her life was made, Teegan didn't, and still doesn't know for sure. But Annabel does. Annabel showed herself in Teegan during that day on the beach, in order to keep from happening what had happened to her. Annabel couldn't bear to see, much less live, a similar if not identical situation. Her awakening kept Teegan from dying herself that day, as she was almost drowned with Cyril.
Unfortunately, Annabel's gestures of kindness, to ease the pain, have been scrambled hopelessly in Teegan's mind. Annabel's memories blur with her own, causing Teegan to believe that she's crazy rather than Annabel herself. This is why Teegan is so unsure of her past-- especially the day Cyril was murdered-- and why she, at the strangest of times, wonders why she is still living. Annabel is manifested within Teegan as craziness-- Teegan doesn't believe that Annabel's voice or memories or opinions are real. She simply believes she is psychologically disturbed from the tragedy, but is much too embarrassed and frightened to tell anyone or seek help.
Another complication in the relationship with Teegan and Annabel is that Annabel is preoccupied with finding her lost love that she left in the land of living after she was murdered. This leads Teegan to have uncharacteristic thoughts and a very high attraction to boys with dark, unkempt hair that are around her age. Annabel's desperate searching leaves Teegan confused and often feeling like she is missing something.
present
Four years after the “accident” on the beach, and Teegan was sick and tired of holding her tongue. She couldn’t stand the town she’d once loved; even being there made her feel nauseated all the time. It was all her fault. If only she’d said something. If only she could bring herself to speak the truth. But she couldn’t. The only truth she dared to tell her parents was that she needed out. She needed time away from the island. Heartbroken by their daughter’s shift in personality and distant attitude, they refused at first.
But then Teegan’s depression worsened. After finally admitting that their daughter needed help, they brought her to a child psychologist, who agreed that some time away from the familiar could help her get her spirit back. Reluctantly, they searched for the best schools nationwide. They happened to take a particular interest in Baum Academy, and soon enough, Teegan was packing her bags for the Big Apple. The neighbors were shocked—no one, not even Teegan expected her parents to send her away to a big city full of pop culture, modern day ideas, and various religions. But the shock of their daughter’s transformation was so drastic, drastic measures needed to be taken.
