past
Joanna Roberts and Preston James first met at a kid's acting class when they were both 9 years old. You know, one of those things parents use to hope their kids become talented and famous so they can live vicariously through them. Well, this time it worked. At least for one of them. Preston was a natural, and was on Broadway when he was 19. Only as a dancer at that time, but he grabbed people's attention and soon he was a household name in the broadway community. He was charismatic, outgoing, and very talented and handsome, but also modest and modern in a refreshing way considering the small town he came from.
Meanwhile, Joanna took to the craft only in the safety of her bedroom. She found she had severe stagefright and even passed out when she was required to stand onstage as a flower in an elementary school play. She'd always been more reserved, and even though Preston had always managed to get her out of her shell, he left for New York in high school, before she'd reached her brightest. She still couldn't really speak in front of crowds, but she instead found her niche in other forms of art. Specifically paintings and pencils, charcoal and pastels. The natural world around her was her favorite. Trees, flowers, leaves, rain, mountains, grass, rivers, waterfalls, everything about it struck her as beautiful. Joanna left for New York after two years of community college, switching to a larger program that supported her art as a career. She was very successful, and started making money and appearing in galleries before her graduation. In the meantime, Preston was gaining more and more respect and hype. His roles were becoming larger, and he was improving as well.
They met again in a coffee shop. It didn't take them long to figure out who the other was, and while Joanna was contemplating saying hello, Preston sauntered up the way he always did and asked straight-out if she remembered him. THey immediately rekindled their old friendship, and Joanna invited him to a gallery show featuring some of her work. "As your date?" Preston asked her, and as she stammered and blushed profusely he figured she meant yes. She hadn't, feeling it would've been to forward, but was happy he could tell. He'd always been able to see straight through her. She knew he could tell how much she'd truly missed him, and how her heart fluttered to be around him again. Unbeknownst to the shy girl, his did, too. He'd always had a crush on her, even though it took him years to realize it. And then he could tell she wasn't ready for a relationship of that kind when he had to leave. He'd kissed her on the lips before his plane ride and made her swear she'd come to New York City no matter what. He was so happy she'd really done it.
