personality
Katrina has never understood what others found so exciting about being indoors. For as long as she can remember, Katrina has felt personally violated by the four walls constantly imposed on either side of her throughout her youth. A childhood of sitting quietly in formal tea rooms as pushed Katrina to the outdoors, and she wholeheartily embraces it. She has always felt a special connection to any and all animals: she sometimes finds that she sympathizes much more with the birds in the trees above her and the insects beneath her feet than with any of the people in her life. The stringent order imposed upon her growing up has made her grow to hate order of any sort, and Katrina spends any possible free time in the forest or the fields, surrounding herself with the anarchy in which her animal friends dwell. The same is true for plants: Katrina can identify almost any plant or tree upon sight, and can rattle off several facts about almost any specimen.
This level of intelligence and devotion is not ubiquitous in Katrina’s life, however. She has trouble following any sort of orders, and is as such disinclined to put forth an enormous effort obeying them. She particularly despises having to sit still, and during classes is almost always more intent on squirming as much as possible in the confined space of her desk and chair than she is on the lesson. More often than not she finds her eyes drifting to the window, longing for the beauty of the outdoors, the freedom and openness that she has always craved. Katrina has no issue with her atrocious grades and utter lack of “school smarts”, however: through her eyes, better grades will simply lead to more school, which will lead to more having to sit still and obey orders, and that is something that Katrina absolutely does not want. No, the less she learns from school, the less school she will have to endure, and the less school she has to endure, the better.
The absolute hatred of authoritative figures has led to another, more subconscious quality in Katrina, which is the need for adventure and, more importantly, the need to be in charge. Katrina can almost always be found romping around the woods, leading a group of boys on a rampage for pirate treasure or hidden magical artifacts. Headstrong by nature, Katrina is a stubborn group member, and is not afraid to bully and belittle her subordinates until they do what she pleases. This doesn’t mean that she is ineffective by any standards, as she is also willing to go to any lengths to accomplish the group’s goal, being the first to bravely step into a dangerous situation, and the first to sacrifice her dignity for the common good.
past
Katrina was born on June 4th, 1996, on a small farm on the very Eastern border of Tennessee, which her father had purchased after his return from military service. She and her younger sister Emma were homeschooled from Kindergarten, as the nearest educational establishment was about a six-hour drive from their home. Katrina’s parents, Daniel and Laney, were both incredibly conservative parents, clothing their daughters in thick hoop skirts, petticoats, corsets, bonnets, kerchiefs, and other ladylike fashions. While their father and his farmhands toiled in the fields beneath the hot southern sun, Katrina and Emma were cooped up inside the tiny farmhouse, learning such elegant skills as cooking, cleaning, signing their names in elegant calligraphy, washing clothes, churning butter, milking cows, and sewing, as well as spending hours upon hours copying spelling words and math facts onto miniature chalkboards. Emma, fascinated by her mother’s lessons, approached each new skill with enthusiasm. Katrina, however, had other ideas.
Fed up with hours upon hours in tiny rooms, and agonized by a tedious existence with next to no day-to-day variation, Katrina began to sneak out. The ventures were small at first: a midnight tiptoe down to the refrigerator to snatch a popsicle, a run out to the woods at noon to collect a few leaves before ducking behind a bush as her father lumbered by in search. However, as she grew older and more confident in her abilities, her mischief escalated to a larger scale. Eventually she had enlisted the majority of her father’s farmhands into her games, changing into their boots and suspenders whenever she got the chance, and leading her little band on full-scale raids of nearby farms and stores, armed with nothing but sticks and whatever farm tools they managed to snatch when her father wasn’t looking.
This lifestyle didn’t last forever, however. In Katrina’s thirteenth summer, her father made the grim announcement: the Clark Family Farm was going out of business. Katrina’s farmhand minions were all fired, and the family relocated to the city Daniel had grown up in: New York, New York. Timid and polite Emma was set to attend a public school of the highest social and academic standards. For such a disheveled and misbehaved child as Katrina, however, special consideration had to be made. Her parents selected Baum Academy, hoping that its strict procedures of discipline would improve her attitude and behavior.
present
Of course, her parents were completely wrong. Katrina was miserable for her first few weeks at Baum, wondering if she really would be forced to give up her adventurous way of life. Then she signed up for an outdoor living seminar on a whim and met Wilbur Hicks.
Wilbur was everything that Katrina had ever been seeking in a friend. Where her father’s farmhands had been grudgingly accepting of her mischievous master plans, Wilbur embraced them with the same enthusiasm as she did. The two of them went on many adventures together throughout the parks in New York City, and through him Katrina soon became assimilated into the many groups mischievous, adventurous boys at Baum Academy. Though she is surly and sour around the girls, whom she finds to be shallow and irritating, she enjoys her time roughhousing, cutting class, and exploring with the boys more than she has ever enjoyed anything in her life.
