Rey was quite a night owl, so it was no surprise that she couldn't sleep that night. She tossed and turned, trying to get comfortable, to no avail. Not wanting to disturb her sleeping roommate, she slipped on her overlarge skate shoes and crept out of the dorm room.
The autumn night was still and clear. Rey gazed at the stars overhead as she walked, making her way to a secluded area of the park, where she could hear the pond water lapping gently and pretend it was the ocean back in Santa Rosalia. She wasn't fond of the water. Actually, she was terrified of it. But she liked to admire from a safe distance as her family enjoyed wading and swimming. So with this soothing, familiar sound, she laid in the grass, staring up into the sky with wonder. Little pinpricks of light twinkled gently, and the inky black space seemed to widen and deepen. And so Rey fell into a light sleep in the park.
She woke again after only two hours, perhaps because her body was unaccustomed to the uncomfortable dirt mattress. Dirt had streaked across her middle and over the top of her cheekbone. The night air had cooled more and she ran her hands over her arms, attempting to stop the goose bumps from spreading.
Rey got up and carefully made her way back to Baum's campus, avoiding those shady characters that she usually would be drawn to. After all, she had wanted to attend Baum so badly, and her parents had agreed. The least she could do was not get into a ton of trouble. A little was fine.
It wasn't until she reached Steinbeck Hall that she realized how much trouble she was really in.
She was locked out.
Rey stood outside the door, cursing her lapse in judgment. Trying to decide what to do, she picked leaves and pieces of grass out of her long black ponytail. She could call her roommate. But of course, her phone was left to charge on her nightstand. And her roommate wouldn’t have been too please about being woken up anyway. She could wait for someone else to come along and open the door. Who knew when that would be? She didn’t want to stay out here all night. It was autumn, after all, and the nights were colder than she was used to. Rey huffed, wishing fervently for her sweatshirt that currently hung over the closet doorknob. Damnit, why didn't she think of that? She wrapped her arms around her exposed abdomen, shivering.
