Another Monday morning and another week full of the same old routine, another day closer to the end of his story. A simple walk from the Jabberwocky to the very brightly lit Starbucks was more than he really needed this morning, but he had to get that slight bit of caffeine in his system. The warmth outside was not really something he wanted either and the normal jacket he wore over his white button up was just far too hot to wear outside. It lay propped over a lounge in the book store with a very happy Maine Coon flopped against it and spreading her love for him all over it.
Nathan pushed his hair back smoothly, opening the glass door to the coffee shop, almost pausing at the soft wave of coffee that rushed over his nostrils, what a fantastic smell. It was the second most enjoyed place, next to the shop, that he liked to just come, sit and relax in. Nathan, being the avid people watcher, had realized that people truly come forth just before their morning bout of coffee. They are far more honest with the world in how they were at home rather than the fake mask that they choose to throw on when they go out into the working world. Every coffee shop was a treasure trove of people running in and out, a pile of human books for Nathan to read. This little store always had its normal few and then the tourists. The normal crowd wasn't in this morning and there was quite a line stacked up at the counter. He kept his eyes on the menu, even though he knew exactly what he wanted.
There was a small crowd of older ladies gossiping in front of him and smiling happily at one another. They had to be tourists. Nathan watched them out of the corner of his eyes, amusing himself with the attire of these little women. One had on a black "I ♥ NY" shirt flopped loosely over her shoulder and the others were trying to coerce her into putting it on. Another lady had a white shirt of the same kind on her body, proudly showing it off to the others and still trying to help get the first woman to put on the black one. Nathan's lips turned up a little at the corner, these women were amusing to say the least and it was probably their first time in New York, even though some of them were upwards of 75-80 years old. The line pushed onwards and forced the women to stop cavorting and order their drinks.
The voice in the back of his head was normally quiet in the morning, for it took a while for the Jabberwocky to awaken from its sleep and all it normally needed was that jump of caffeine. This morning was different, however, and the beast was wide awake. "And there they stand, talking back to back, these beasts you cavort with, I'd rather eat them as a snack," the beast murmured playfully at Nathan's mind. "These things you choose to watch, amazing as though they may be, are annoying and useless, Nathan, perhaps you should make them flee." Nathan shook his head a little, making the world a little light for a second. He spoke back to the beast by only shaking his head, choosing to ignore the soft chiding remarks that it enjoyed pushing into his mind. The line moved forward and suddenly Nathan was propped at the front, staring at the menu for a second almost dazed. This was going to be a long day.
