personality
The first thing people notice about Scarlett is her caring, nurturing side. It's the most prominent, for sure. Scarlett's always loved to take care of other people and help them out however she can. Growing up with deaf parents, it's always been an automatic thing to assist everyone else. Scarlett's the kind of helper, though, that doesn't think about helping herself. It's not that everyone else comes first, it's that Scarlett never worries over personal things. A sickness that usually only lasts a day or two will stick with Scarlett for a week. Once, she went about with her life with a broken arm for two weeks before being dragged to the doctor. They had to reset it. Those close to her often worry over her, especially since she has an addictive personality. Occasional boughts of insomnia are never good for Scarlett; the next day she'll usually have several more apps and television shows that she can't leave alone. Don't even try to mess with her coffee addiction, either: every morning it's a large cup of vanilla mocha, with a double shot of espresso. If she doesn't have coffee when she wakes up, the world can burn.
Scarlett's also a very take charge, powerful person. If there's a problem, Scarlett steps up to solve it. She was always the group leader in middle school, the one to organize and get shit done. Scarlett's still like that; she's big into planning and being in charge. A few people think she's a control freak, bur Scarlett just likes things going her way. She also rarely ever backs down from a challenge; Scarlett likes to push the pedal to the metal.
The one thing Scarlett loves most about herself is how aspirational and optimistic she is. She's aware she's in a bad situation financially, but Scarlett definitely has dreams of grandeour somewhere over the rainbow (yes I just said that). One day, Scarlett dreams of graduating college, having a teaching job and being comfortable with her life. Not forgeting fun along the way, of course. Scarlett can make a lot out of a little and likes to picture a better world. At the moment, she's pretty impressionable, though.
past
Emily and Bill Perry were not the type people thought should become parents. Both were deaf, and people thought that would be unfair for a child. There were two people who trusted Emily and Bill, though: June and Daniel Carter. Both couples had known each for years, so when June and Daniel had a baby girl, it was the obvious thing to name Emily and Bill the godparents.
Scarlett only knew her biological parents for two years. One night, they had gone to a concert and never came back. A drunk driver hit them head-on at fifty miles per hour. Emily and Bill were devastated when they found out, but knew they had to be strong. Scarlett was now in their care and they didn't want her to be adopted out to some random family who didn't know her, so they officially became Scarlett's parents.
The first few years of Scarlett's life were very different from most kids'. Because her parents were deaf and could only teach her ASL, Scarlett went to speach lessons every day to learn how to talk properly. She began signing and talking simultaniously, even though her elementary school teachers would always discourage it. Unfortunately, a lot of her peers thought Scarlett was weird and different, and didn't want to talk to her. When Scarlett did make friends, their parents' wouldn't let them go over to Scarlett's house because of her parents. It made sense; they were little kids, what if something happened? Emily and Bill wouldn't be able to hear cries for help.
Scarlett wanted to do something outside of school, something that didn't require talking or signing. So when she was eight, Scarlett was signed up for dance. She took to it right away; ballet, jazz, lyrical...it was like a whole new form of sign language to her. She was expressing the music with her whole body instead of her hands. Of course, Scarlett just thought it was fun when she was eight. These deep thoughts didn't come till she was around sixteen. Even though they couldn't hear the music, Emily and Bill loved seeing Scarlett dance. Scarlett stopped dancing when she graduated.
High school was pretty uneventful for Scarlett. Because they were older and could understand, people talked to Scarlett a lot more. She had a nice group of friends and could always be counted on for mom-ish advice. Because her dream job is to be a teacher, Scarlett had a bit of a kindergarten teacher mentallity, even with her friends. She had plenty of fun, but could always be counted on to dole out advice, waggle her finger, and even clean up after her friends.
present
Scarlett had known since she was little that she wanted to teach. What age or subject, she wasn't sure. But the feeling she got whenever she helped people was too addictive and she wanted to do that everyday. What she hadn't expected was the cost of college. Scarlett had been a good student in high school, but she never thought to apply for any type of scholarships until it was too late.
The high school she had just graduated from, Baum, had a great offer for her, though. A new student had just joined the ranks and he was deaf, but like most schools, Baum didn't have an interpreter on hand. Scarlett snatched the job right away. It wasn't like "going back" to high school for another few years would be too bad, plus Scarlett could save up money for college. She's now Dan Kaplan's interpreter.

book title The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
backstory "Dorothy Gale is the protagonist of many of the Oz novels by American author L. Frank Baum, and the best friend of Oz's ruler Princess Ozma. Dorothy first appears in Baum's classic children's novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and reappears in most of its sequels. She also is the main character in various adaptations, notably the classic 1939 movie adaptation of the book, The Wizard of Oz. Even when she does not appear in a sequel (as in the case of The Marvelous Land of Oz), she is arguably the most important character in the series, as it is she, through her actions in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, who sparked later events.
Dorothy's adventures continue. In later books, Oz steadily becomes more familiar to her than her homeland of Kansas.[1] Indeed, Dorothy eventually goes to live in an apartment in the Emerald City, but only once her Aunt Em and Uncle Henry have settled in a farmhouse on its outskirts, unable to pay the mortgage on their house in Kansas."
