clothing style He wears a lot of vintage-looking clothes; old blazers and ties with odd patterns and whatnot. His clothing is usually burned or smudged with oil from his experiments.
distinctive traits Scientific blather, various contraptions and tools hanging out of hat brims and pockets, some nominal aphasia (he forgets nouns), and a quirky expression.
...personal*
personality Above all else, Oliver is absurdly eccentric. He doesn’t follow social norms, nor do the opinions of others affect him at all. He knows that 90% of those who know him think he’s a bit off his rocker, and he doesn’t mind – after all, he enjoys what he does. Often talking scientific jibber-jabber aloud to himself as he works, he’s known for using big words that others don’t understand, constructing Rube Goldberg-esque machines to accomplish simple tasks, doodling blueprints on napkins or even on his arms in times of crisis, and loud, public epiphanies. “Eureka!” is his favorite epiphany word, as he greatly respected the work of Archimedes. And his speech is made even stranger by his mild nominal aphasia, meaning he occasionally can’t think of the right noun to use. It’s usually something very simple – he’ll forget the word for “cow” or “chair” but remember more complicated nouns like “acupuncturist” or “capillary.”
Oliver has a terrible sense of direction and is relatively oblivious to hazard – though he is undeniably extremely intelligent, as indicated by his inventions and complicated, mathematical thought processes, he lacks common sense and street smarts. Though his idiosyncrasies and childish wonder may be endearing to the patient and accepting, they can also be somewhat obnoxious and grating to the intolerant – Oliver doesn’t know when to “stop” because he doesn’t recognize that his behavior is out of the ordinary. This makes him seem somewhat immature, but he actually has a surprising amount of control over his emotions; Oliver can’t remember the last time he cried or lashed out at someone. However, this may just be because Oliver is almost eternally cheerful.
Unable to recognize danger unless it’s staring him straight in the face, Oliver isn’t very easily frightened and has a marvelous sense of adventure. He likes to exhibit his inventions to others, but he isn’t really a show-off, and he seems to take all criticism as constructive instead of harmful. For such a young soul, he has a surprisingly strong work ethic when he focuses, but it’s very hard to make him focus on things – his own interest has to guide him there. Inquisitive and observant, Oliver loves to know things, though he seems to be somewhat oblivious to the feelings of other human beings if they are doing anything short of screaming their heads off at him, in which case he usually gets very small and slinks off to play with his creations. Because of this ignorance of the intricacies of human behavior, Oliver isn’t very good with people; he doesn’t know how to make small talk and is somewhat blunt, as there isn’t much of a filter on his thoughts. But that’s just the way he is – he is always honest, genuine, and wholly himself, no matter what the circumstances.
For all his jovial behavior, Oliver is not a social or outgoing creature and is fairly reclusive, keeping to himself and not going out of his way to make contact with other people. Though those close to him are very dear to him in his heart, he may often neglect his relationships without realizing it, as he has a very selective memory. He also has an eidetic memory, meaning he can remember anything he has ever read after reading it once, but may have difficulty reciting things due to his aphasia. This frustrates him easily; he’s known to get quite down on himself about his aphasia, as not being able to properly explain and clarify is the ultimate aggravation for an inventor trying to display his creations. In fact, Oliver is somewhat easily frustrated, particularly with his inventions when they don’t come out as he planned them, and often needs encouragement from outside sources to give him a second wind and the drive to finish his projects. There are many things he has left only partially completed, and he often doesn’t return to failures – Oliver hates the idea of failure and dreads the idea of being one, though he doesn’t often share that with others.
Oliver is an arachnophobic and is also terrified of large animals. Anything larger than a medium-sized dog makes him awfully nervous, and he just melts into a puddle when he gets too frightened.
past Oliver Willoughby Quinn was born in a crowded hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on August 11th, 1984, to Jonathan and Arietta Quinn. He was a healthy little boy with a shock of auburn hair, but he grew up quickly - though moreso in brain power than in size. His elder brother Wilbur was four years his senior and was somewhat of a recluse in comparison to his younger sibling, who spent the early days of his youth exploring every crevice of the inside of their small suburban home, as well as the front and back yards.
As both of his parents had steady jobs that provided an equally steady flow of income to the family, Oliver lived a comfortable life - he always had a few presents to open at Christmas, new clothes for the first day of kindergarten, and three meals a day. He didn't mind that he got less attention once his younger brother Miles was born, when he was four years old and Wilbur eight. In fact, Oliver didn't pay much attention to either of his brothers; the rest of the world was far more interesting.
However, one's backyard can only be so exciting, and after some time, Oliver grew tired of it. There was no more fun in digging up worms or picking flowers or pretending to be an airplane, and so, young Oliver turned to the next best thing - drawing.
He used only crayons and paper, and though he was fairly good, what was truly amazing about his scribbled-out little worlds was the complexity, the level of detail. Oliver, who had never been able to sit still in his life, could suddenly pore for hours over a vast drawing of a city, a plan for a superpowered space ship with rocket cannons, his own new worlds.
When Oliver was eight, his parents bought him a chemistry set. After setting Miles' bedroom on fire, they decided they would not be buying him any more of those.
Oliver proved himself to be extremely bright. He was permitted to skip the second grade, but it proved not to be enough - Oliver was already working several levels above his peers, despite his aphasia. Around that time, he also became fascinated with the works of Rube Goldberg, as well as technology and inventions. He became somewhat obsessed with dismantling old microwaves, calculators, phones...anything his parents would allow him to disassemble (and sometimes the things they didn't allow him to). By the time he was in middle school, Oliver had set up his own little workshop in the garage in which he worked on his projects. However, at the age of thirteen, disaster struck once again; one of Oliver's projects exploded. It ended up causing the car to explode as well, which led to the whole garage going up in flames.
Needless to say, Oliver's parents were not pleased.
After repairs were made to the garage and a new car was bought, Oliver's parents informed him that if he wanted to continue to invent, he would have to do so outside. So, with the aid of his father, Oliver built himself a small workshed all his own, and that became his new place of work.
Graduating from high school a year early, Oliver received a fairly hefty scholarship for his grades (Though his community service was rather lacking - he disappointed his parents in that he never really felt the need to be helpful. Or try out for any sports, but that's a different story). He went to a fairly prestigious university and majored in aerospace engineering, then went on to get his graduate degree, which was another three years of school; by the time Oliver had finished with all of his education, he was twenty-three, with nowhere really to stay and no long-standing job.
During the time he was in graduate school, living in New York City, he was tinkering in his new makeshift workshop (a toolshed in the backyard of his apartment complex...the complex somehow possessed a backyard) when a girl discovered him at work. This girl, Summer Sinclair, informed Oliver that she was new to the city and had gotten lost. She asked for his assistance getting home; Oliver readily agreed, and, after several mishaps (he is terrible with directions) managed to get her back to her place of residence. After that, the two became great friends, and Oliver "adopted" Summer as his "daughter," which is somewhat of a joke between them now. As her "father," Oliver is quite protective of Summer, though he isn't very good at his job and often ends up distracted. However, he is very fond of her, in a completely platonic way. And he'll be very offended if you think otherwise.
present Oliver has found a job as an aerospace engineer, luckily very close to New York City so he was not required to move. He now makes a fairly steady income designing and building rocket ships, and though work hours are long and he is often found working on projects at home or off-hours, he truly loves what he does. It seems this career is the only one for him. He is still quite close to Summer and lives in his own apartment, which is rather small and very messy, but he insists that he likes it that way. Oliver continues to invent things (and blow them up by mistake) on a regular basis, as well, just as he always has.

other notes Oliver is only understandable to the average person about 60% of the time. The other 40%, he is mixing up his words, forgetting nouns, mumbling to himself, or talking scientific jibber jabber. He also has a lot of very odd quirks. He's just...generally very odd.
