...appearance*
hair color Dark brown, very dark brown. Almost black in some lights, though most of the time it's just what it is. Black and dark. It's usually cut pretty carelessly. There's no real style to it. The bangs sweep to the side on their own accord, and if grown out past a certain length, they flip outwards. The ends of his hair typically flip outwards, disobeying the cut he has. On the rare occasion will his hair decide to remain completely straight and orderly. However, he doesn't particularly seem to mind it much, and doesn't take much care of it. He's lucky if he even remembers to brush it.
eye color Much like his hair, his eyes are black. Sure, you could technically classify them as brown. But you'd have to get very, very close to his face to be able to tell the difference between the pupil and the iris, and chances are--if you got that close, he'd probably sock you right in the face. Either way, his eyes are black, and when added with his sickly pallor, heavy bags beneath his eyes and his dark hair, they seem that much more haunting. It doesn't help that there seems to be a strange, dead-look in his eyes. Like he's not seeing what's in front of him all of the time.
build In no way, shape, or form is Ari a buff-bod. He's not exactly scrawny either. You won't seen him walking around shirtless at any point in time. He's a bit soft, in the middle stages of that horrible thing called puberty. It doesn't help that he doesn't take much care of himself; he doesn't get much excersize, and he's a heavy drinker at his young age, so he's got a couple extra pounds. With the right clothing and angle, you could miss it--but he doesn't have any noticible muscular definition.
height
Along with being in the strange throwes of puberty, his height is something else entirely. As where his voice has finally stopped cracking, and he's starting to take a bit more of an adult shape--his height seems to have failed him a bit. He's currently stuck at five feet and eight inches. However, his doctors tell him he'll get taller. Ari's not exactly holding his breath on that one, though.
clothing style Psuedo-Hipster. Whatever that means. You ask him, he'll say Psuedo-Hipster. Mostly, he wears what's comfortable, but he'll purposely put on his big, square-framed glasses if he's feeling particularly clever. Sometimes he'll wear a suit jacket over a t-shirt and jeans, or maybe a buttoned up flannel shirt. Whatever really suits his mood at the time, depending on how sick he feels, additionally. But no matter the style of the clothes, they always have the same sort of qualities. Crinkled, like they've never been ironed. And they have that ever so faint smell of cigarettes. When he's on a drinking binge, he has been known to wear the same outfit two, to three days in a row. However, being at Baum Academy has prevented him from going on the binge, so he's a bit more...hygenic with his clothes, now.
distinctive traits He always seems to look tired. It's not actually that far off from the truth. Ari doesn't get very much sleep, so he always has that pale, almost sick look to him, and he usually seems to have those massive bags beneath his black eyes.
...personal*
personality
To say that Ari was an unhappy person was a complete understatement. For the most part, he considers himself a social leper, and tries to do his best to keep away from people. It's not a very difficult thing to do when you have a very off-putting kind of attitude. Sometimes, he's intentionally mean to send people away to prevent any accidents. He comes across very sarcastic, very cynical, and very careless.
Ari has an addictive personality; people, cigarettes, drugs, alcohol. It didn't help much when he lost his brother, and it sent him further into that depession and the addiction. He's always on that fine line, however. His drug use stops at marijuana, the occasional, rare line of cocaine when the weed doesn't do the job. However, he's usually seen with a cigarette hanging out of the corner of his mouth, and a beer in his hand. It's sad to see such a young boy hooked on substances, but it keeps him from thinking about the past so much. And if he can forget, then he can keep going.
He doesn't see the point in being a regular teenager. He seems wise beyond his years, often not quite seeming like he was actually fifteen years old. At that age, he should be worrying about school, going to parties, having fun, going outside. But for the most part, Ari keeps in his dorm room sitting in front of his computer. There's no point in relationships, because they always end in someone's heart getting broken. He doesn't see the point in parties, or socializing, because it just leaves more room for people to stab you in the back.
However, that's on the outside; on the inside he's like any other teenage boy that wants to fit in. However, he's afraid of fitting in. Of losing someone again that he cares so much about. So he would rather be alone than have to deal with losing someone all over again. He does have a soft side, but he keeps that pretty well hidden for the most part. Whenever someone does manage to get close enough to see that side of him, he tends to retract and say the most injuring comment he can manage.
past
Ari was always a bit different than his big brother. As the second born, his parents expected him to be a bit more babied, and perhaps to be a playmate for Judah. What they didn't expect to have was a baby that didn't cry, that didn't do much of anything. Sure, there were moments where Ari was a typical child, laughing, playing, crying. But for the most part, he was a rather solitary child. Not terribly affectionate, and not terribly expressive. His best friend, his only friend was his big brother, Judah. He'd crawl into Judah's bed at night, he was attatched at Judah's hip.
For the first few year of life, life in the Cain family wasn't so bad. He wasn't the child that his parents had expected, but they grew to love him. Little by little, and with help from Judah, the child became a little more sociable, coming out of the shell that he was seemingly born with. He started to smile a little more, started to act a little more like a young boy his age should. He aspired to be like his brother, who was only two years older than him. Once seperated from that strange attitude he has, Ari was a happy, sociable boy. He got along with his classmates, and even helped out.
However, about the time he turned eight years old, that shell started to creep over him again. He wanted to be alone, and took to staying his room, and not even coming out to play with Judah. At nine and ten years old, he was beginning to make elaborate plans for a funeral. Various letters to Judah, asking his older brother how he wanted the funeral and the wake to go. Such a young boy being so wrapped up in the idea of death, when he had never been part of it began to raise concern. It was Judah that found the letters, it was Judah that told the Cain parents, and it was Judah that urged them to help his little brother.
The next few years consisted of therapy, and coddling, much to his dismay. Though, he could understand why his family didn't dare leave him alone for too long. Just when he seemingly started to come out of it, and even out--the unthinkable happened.
The Cain boys were forbidden to play in the pool in the winter. It could be snowy, dreadfully cold, and it was dangerous for both boys who didn't have much of a liking for the water. However, Ari reached the age of thirteen, his brother at fifteen--the Cain parents decided that it would be alright for Ari and Judah to stay home alone while the parents went out shopping for Christmas gifts. It was a normal winter day, the boys were outside playing in the snow. They were a little closer to the pool than they should have been, but it never seemed to effect their playing before.
But this day was different. This day, Judah was wrestling with his brother and had him pinned in an uncomfortable pose. This day, Ari was fed up with being the smaller, weaker brother. This day, Judah died. Ari shoved his brother off of him, and watched while the world seemed to slow down. He watched as his brother tripped over his own boots, and crashed into the pool. Of course, it couldn't be the shallow end. That's not how Ari's life worked. Judah had to fall in the deep end, where his parents made sure it was deep enough for their divingboard. With the layers of clothing Judah had on, partnered with the blistering cold, and depth of the pool--he never stood a single chance. Ari was frozen down to his shoes, watching Judah's bubbles come to the surface. The water stilled while he stared at the lifeless body of his brother.
Ari hadn't budged and inch, not even when his parents came and screamed, and shrieked and sobbed. He was just as dead inside as the body in the pool throughout the violent shakes that his mother gave him, and through the questioning of the police. It took several months for things to finally start to go back to normal, but Ari wasn't normal. Ari was far, far from normal.
present
His stay in England didn't last for very long. His parents will tell you that they sent them for his own good, to give him a change of scenery and distract him from the memories of his brother that littered the house. However, Ari knew the truth. It was because he was essentially a murderer. He could have jumped in and saved his brother; but he hadn't. He was responsible for Judah's death, and he knew it.
So with much research on his parent's side, they found a school in America called Baum Academy. The world passed around him, his own world stopping each time he went to Judah's grave. Armed with a few suitcases, and his sketchbook full of etchings, he was sent to America. Things were different there; it was harder for him to get cigarettes and alcohol.
Being away from Judah's grave, and his family made him feel isolated, abandonded. Everything he needed was left behind, and now he had to make do with what he had. Which was a lot of booze, a lot of cigarettes, and a lot of forgetting. Even in this new place, Ari was forced to remember the horrible deed he did. In order to keep himsef safe from a broken heart, and keep others far away--he keeps to himself. Anyone who dares try and get to know him gets met with a cutting remark, and an angry stare.

book title Hamlet
backstory Basically Claudius is this crazy bastard who wanted to be king, so what does he do? He ends up killin' his brother, takin' his wife, and generally fucking days up. He's a pretty chill fellow for a moment, spying and skeeving--until he decides to go all kill-ey. Either way, Claudius is a wacko in typical Shakespeare fashion. Murder, incest, drama, death. Yaaay.
