personality
Rafael sees herself as an average girl who gets average grades and is average at Track and Field. She doesn’t think that she will become anything, as she has always been told, but tries desperately to reach for the stars. To get away from turmoil in life she has turned and fallen in love with sports. She is a very sporty girl including Soccer, Track, and Figure Skating. Sports are her life, but when not on the field she attempts to concentrate on studying.
When Rafael was a little girl her parents tended to fight, so she went out and played her sports to get away. In her younger years she had a father complex and was a complete Daddy’s girl. She went on many trips hiking with him when she was little making her perfect relaxation place the mountains. She never got along well with her mother although, who would never let her have friends over and make her do girly things which she came to resent. Her relationship never was and may never be good with her mother, she was the second born of the twins and there for less then her twin sister. Constantly reminded of the others perfection she became self conscious. In later years this grew into a inferiority complex.
The complex, which rules most of her personality, was caused shortly after her father’s untimely death. Fourteen and alone in a house full of others whom hated her she was looked down upon. Rafeal suffered because of her mother’s constant wrath over how she had to be perfect and how she had to be the best of the best pushing her over the edge. She was never good enough for her mother and with the mental, and later on physical, abuse she became not only self conscious but also inferior. This created her inferiority complex that causes her to see herself as ugly and worse then everyone else.
In some ways it helps her, to push herself farther to try and prove that she is the best, but then it also causes her to sometimes cascade into depression and blind jealous fits. She doesn’t know that because of how well she takes care of herself she is beautiful, she always has been, but she never has seen it. At least, not since the last time she heard her father say it.
When Rafael is not comparing herself to everyone else she is a rather nice girl. She is shy because of her complex but she is very friendly. She is only inferior and rude when she has become severally jealous of a person. For the last two years, since joining the college in New York, she has happily lived away from her Mother and Sister which helps her relax. Though every time she gets a call from either one her depressed side shows through, her complex more obvious then normal. (She has no personal hatred for her sister, she loves her sister, but she feels inferior and it sometimes gets in the way of their relationship.)
past
Rafael and her sister Laura were both in San Diego, California. There parents had no clue that they were having twins because they had not had an ultra-sound done so that they would not know the sex of the child. The girls were un-identical and born three hours apart. Since Carter and Maria, the twins parents, had decided on the two names before hand they decided to name their second daughter Rafael. This made Carter proud, feeling like he had a son and a daughter which later seamed to be a little truer. True to her male name, Rafael grew to become a true daddy’s girl (or boy?).
With two kids it was hard for Maria to take care of them both on her own so often Carter ended up taking one to work. In the younger years this was nearly always Rafael, because she was the quieter one, so she grew up around the San Diego Wild Animal Park. As grade school later came around she went out on long hikes and biking trips with her father a lot while her elder sister begged to go with there mother to girl spa days. The two twins were exact opposites, though each others only protection when there parents started fighting.
At age seven Rafael was an average student, while her sister was a grade ahead, and playing Soccer. She enjoyed the excitement of running, it made her happy. It was during that winter though her mother decided to put both of the girls into figure skating, causing an argument about Rafael not being ‘girly enough’. This was an argument which the girls would constantly hear over the next few years from their parents who would constantly grovel over the twins. At times there father would disappear for a week or two at a time, there mother telling them he was out hiking or visiting their grandmother without any notice.
Around the time that Rafael was nine her mother started to become jealous of her daughter, from the attention that she got from her father that her mother never got anymore. Rafael barely noticed the ridicule because her mother had always been harsh because of the difference between her average grades and Skating skills and her sisters above average skills (though in truth even then Rafael was better at skating.) Rafael, taking her fathers advice to be strong, used these words as encouragement to work harder. Right before the twin’s tenth birthday there father was called by another Wild Animal Zoo in Europe to come and help them in the creation of the park. There father accepted and went to Europe, leaving for three years.
Though not alone Rafael felt isolated, her Mother got stricter then before and only allowed her to be out of the house when not in sport, club, or school activities. She was then forced to join her sister and mother on Spa days and girl outings. She felt left out, but she took it as a good thing at that time and tried to enjoy the time with her family. She saw her sister happy when she could relax on those days, not like when she was in the skating ring. Her sister’s love for figure skating had left years before. It was also on one of those very Spa trips that the girls accidently stumbled over and found out that there mother was having an affair while there father was over seas.
Two day’s before the girl’s fourteenth birthday there father had returned. He brought them many gifts from his journey and showered his daughters in love, never once glancing at there mother. The girls hoped he did not know, they did not want to see him hurt, but Rafael knew her father far better then that. Shortly after there Fourteenth birthday the terrible news came in, there father had died in a car crash, how exactly was unknown because of the intense heat having burned his body to a crisp. There was no way that one could tell after an oil diesel truck blew up with a tiny car under it.
After the ‘accident’ everything went bad in Rafael’s life. The family lost there house, was forced to move out and into an apartment, and soon after the twins were thrown in with a new father. There mother quickly remarried without much hesitation after there fathers death. Neither of the girls would take on the new name, not knowing or trusting there step-father at all, but grew up around him through there teen years. Shortly after the marriage they were moved to New York. The man was nearly never around, busy with work nearly all the time it became easy for their mothers new wrath to appear.
Both of the girls had grown into beautiful young woman, but there Mother only saw Laura as her own Masterpiece. She saw Rafael with only jealousy. She was the one that had the man in which Maria had loved heart in the end. Rafael’s life turned into constant ridicule and abuse. She tried to be strong, as her Father had always taught her to be, but years of the ridicule beat her down. One day, when she was Seventeen, her Mother physically pushed her down the stairs to get her point across. It was the first time that Rafael was physically abused, but not the last. The fall down the hardwood stairs resulted in a scar running down her back from the mid of her spine down to her tail bone. This is the only scar from these ‘accidents’ that never healed. From that day forward Rafael had a fast growing Inferiority Complex which grew to try and rule her life.
present
Though having lived in New York for many years Rafael is still learning the ropes of the big city. The concrete jungle is not an easy place for her to navigate unlike the mountains she used to visit so often. She is a sophomore in college and is enjoying her classes, but is more enjoying her scholarship which allows her to be in Track and Field to pay for her college. She still practices her figure skating twice a week and also helps teach a class for beginners to get a little cash. She loves her new life, but sometimes her complex tends to get in the way of where she wants to go.
She has not seen her sister in nearly a year and is missing her, though not her Mother who calls her every few weeks over the phone. Living in the dorm and working on her classes she is enjoying her new life outside of the normal every day she used to know. She doesn’t know though that soon her complex will cause her more trouble then it is worth. It may even cost her her dream of going to the Olympics.
Rafael still has near to no friends, causing her to be a slight outcast. She sometimes hears people whispering about her but she doesn’t understand and thinks they are looking down on her. She puts all of her energy when this happens into her skating and though she has been given offers she has never taken any special coaching offers for skating because she doesn’t believe that she is beautiful enough for the true figure skating. Instead, she continues to believe in herself being able to go to Olympics as a Track sprinter.

Laura John/ 19 / student
Carter John/ deceased
likes Figure Skating, Sports, Sister, Mountains, and Healthy Food.
dislikes Cooking, Cleaning, Extremely girly things (spa days), Mother, and Junk Food.
other notes She will not eat Candy if her life depended on it.
Just because her mother had an affair doesn’t mean that her mother didn’t care. It could also point out that she cared so much that because she thought she was losing Rafeal’s father because of there fighting and such she needed something to cling on too as to not loose herself. In the application it makes her out to be evil because that is how Rafael saw her, but she isn’t evil as much as she was just jealous that her husband no longer cared and only stayed with her for the sake of the children and just needed to feel loved again as for the fact of the affair.
As for her Complex, it is also what strives her to be better. She is still seeing everyone around her as being better and since her complex also roots more on the appearance level as mentioned she doesn’t think she is beautiful enough to figure skate as too where you don’t technically have to be pretty to be in track, just fast.
