...appearance*
physical... I’ve got long hair, and it’s naturally black, but I like to highlight and dye it. I have dark brown eyes. I’m only 5’1” which is pretty short for my age, but lots of Chinese girls are short, so it’s not that big of a deal. Except when I want to reach a shelf. Or play a sport. I’ve been told that I have a dancer’s build. Good thing too, since I like to dance.
clothing style... I’ve got a kind of style that is bi-polar. I like to dress really girly sometimes, mostly due to Jinn, but other times I have a more punky style. It tends to fluctuate.

life until now... My parents are first generation immigrants from China. When they came, they brought my mother’s mother, Mujia with them. We call her Laolao, and she has tried to teach us about our culture, without much luck. They moved to Sacramento, California, where my sister Rebecca was born. Then they moved to Quincy, Illinois. They had my sister Lindsay and after that, I was born. Laolao was disappointed with my birth, because my father had not been given a son. Only a year later, my brother Jordan was born. After a while, my mother had twins, Emily and Katie, which Laolao says is good luck. We all have Chinese names, because Laolao was very insistent on it, but we use our American names most.
I’ve had a relatively normal life. Parents were both employed and hardworking. We all lived up to the Asian stereotype of being straight A students. However, my brother was the perfect one. My parents didn’t seem to put much stock into it, but Laolao had given him the name Jing, which meant “flawless”. He was revered in a way that we girls never were, and it happened to go to his head. He was doted upon, and in an effort to get Laolao to approve of me, I worked harder. It never seemed to work, and even hurt me. I didn’t have a lot of real friends growing up. I was gullible and people took advantage of me. Laolao continued to think I was unlucky, especially when the twin towers went down on my birthday.
In school, I tried my very best to be popular. And it worked, to an extent. I hung with the popular crowd and I did whatever it took to please them. I ended up doing lots of homework that wasn't mine, and doing favors and dares and other things that I really wish I hadn't done. But the very worst part of all of it was the boys. I've been used more times than I have fingers. Guys see that I'll do whatever I can to make them happy, and when they're bored, they just toss me aside. It wasn't until my freshman year of high school was half over that I discovered something.
I was two people.
The genie appeared in dreams first, floating around, not saying much. He began to talk more, and when that happened, I'd start to hear his voice when I was awake too. Crazy, right? I thought I was going insane, or maybe there really was something to Laolao's superstitious crap. When I asked Laolao to cleanse me of negative energy, I thought she might of fainted from excitement. She was pleased that I was taking an interest, but really, I just thought that the genie was a stray evil spirit that had attached itself to me. Turns out, he wasn't, and he was really more annoying than evil. He seemed to be most prominent when I was trying to people-please and quickly drew the connection. He was why I screwed up all the time. He was why I never got my own way and let everyone push me around. Well, I decided that I wasn't having that anymore.
the present... When I was a sophomore, I was once again used and dumped like an old napkin. And my luck hadn't gotten any better. Jordan still thought he was the king of the house and Laolao still talked about me like I wasn't in the room. With Rebecca and Lindsay gone away to other schools, I didn't have much of a support system. So with my outstanding GPA, I applied to Baum. Full scholarship for the smart Asian kid. Anyway, I suppose it actually helped my home life. Before leaving home, Laolao actually gave me a whole bunch of good luck charms, reminded me of the right colors to wear to keep spirits away and even teared up a bit as I walked out. But she swept out the entryway, to get rid of the negative energy.
I don't really know what to do here. I'm trying to find out how to really separate myself from the genie. Now that I look back, so much makes sense of why I felt conflicted about certain things and the nightmares I used to have seem pretty clear. Hopefully I can try to get this mess straightened out without a shrink, but it isn't looking so promising. And Jinn is no help.
