...appearance*
hair color Naturally a light brown color, Mary has taken to dying her hair a rich, deep black. It's not uncommon to see her lengthen her medium-length locks with extensions, or to wear wigs of a different color. It's a whole lot cheaper and healthier for her hair than dying it time and time again.
eye color A surprisingly crystal clear rich green. It's not uncommon for her eyes to seem a steely blue, depending on her light and her makeup. However her eyes no matter the color, seem to be piercing and clear, almost with a glassy sheen over them.
build She is thin, if not unhealthily so. She has no severe curves, and should her waist look smaller than it really is, you can thank a corset for that. Her chest is on the smaller side, and everything about her is rather small. Her proportions are doll-like, and somewhat surreal.
height 5'4"
clothing style Goth. She's a fan of the old-school goth look, but New York summers can be hot. When it comes summertime she favors a less layered version of a goth look. Corsets are a favorite, and she doesn't descriminate between pants, skirts, or dresses. Though, when she's particularly tired the pale, ghastly girl is likely to wear an oversized sweatshirt of the black variety, and not much else.
distinctive traits She has a rather uncanny face, period. Her eyes are large, but the corners are downturned and her eyelids are always seemingly drooped, giving her a bedroom eye. Her nose is tiny, and pointed, upturned just enough that it can be considered a 'button nose'. Her lips are also extremely tiny, not much wider than her small nose. These lips are also seemingly downturned at the corners. Her face comes to a sharp point, making her look quite surreal.
Mary also has a large grey chestpiece of a Cameo on her chest, and on her right arm she has three large solid black squares. On both of her upper-thighs she has angel wings.

personality
At a first glance, Mary seems to be like one of those girls that you'd cross the street to get away from. It's not uncommon for her shoes to be several inches high, and she's a favor of the color black. Her face seems to be one of those faces that always look severe, so people tend to mistake her for oneof your stereotypical bad-mood goths.
Contrary to popular belief, the girl is really quite sweet, if not a bit strange. She is a well spoken young woman, her words coming out in a gentle tone, almost slow with its clarity. She's really quite soft, though she seems to be the quiet calm before the storm. Unfortunately, she is quite the ticking time bomb.
You see, she has insomnia as well as a slight paranoia. No voices, and the hallucinations are minimal. As long as she avoids mirrors and blood, she's really quite sane. She tends to make a mountain out of a mole-hill when these things are involved. She has been known to shriek uncontrollably at the sight of just enough blood that raw meat would put out. You see, she's haunted. The person that haunts her is a very dramatic spirit. It's really quite difficult to explain, but what might appear like a plate of a bloody slice of meat will appear to her that the blood is leaking off the table, threatening to fill the room.
Mirrors are quite obviously a no-go as well. As that spirit seems to be awfully fond of terrorizing Mary through them. She's extremely quick when she has to deal with mirrors, and her dorm is lacking reflective surfaces. Her windows have been blacked out by duct tape, she has no shiny metal knick-knacks around, and her only mirror is a small, propted up table vanity that she covers with a black cloth when not in use.
The poor thing suffers from insomnia as well, which makes her perpetually tired. Her movements are somewhat slow, and you might find her dozing for a few seconds against a wall if she stands there for long enough. She's up at all strange hours of the night, and sleep rarely comes to her. Because every time she closes her eyes, those nightmares wreak havok on her. Causing her to wake up screaming and shouting. Rather than deal with constant fears, she has conditioned her body to survive on minimal sleep, getting just enough to keep the sleep deprivation hallucinations at bay. One sort of hallucination is quite enough, thank you.
But all of this aside, if you look into her records you'll notice that she has a few good marks. Her long winded essays tend to score high, as does her homework. Luckily, because homework makes up most of her grade, she's managed to stay afloat for this long. Her insomnia makes her extremely groggy, which can make it difficult for her to focus or remember the things she's studied in her sleepless stupor.
past
Mary wasn't born with all of these problems. When she was born in Reading, she was the happy bundle of joy to her parents. They dolled the young girl up, paraded her up and down town. You see, Mary was a miracle baby. Her parents were told that her mother would never be able to conceive. Though that never stopped them from trying, and about four miscarriages later, Nona held onto the pregnancy and Mary was born.
The young girl grew up in the small town, and she wasn't lacking in friends whatsoever. She was raised like a young lady with manners, and she never strayed. When she was about fifteen years old, her life instantly changed. And that's where the Mary we've come to know developed.
It was a slumber party, and the small group of five girls were playing party games, as usual. Light as a Feather, Stiff as a Board. Ouija. Colors. And of course...Bloody Mary. As the story went, should you spin around in the dark, and call for Bloody Mary three times then taunt her, the spirit was supposed to appear in the mirror.
All the girls squeezed into Jennifer's bathroom, and with stifled giggles, they all turned and chanted the name, then looked into the mirrors, light up only by a single candle that one of the other girls had brought in. They all waited expectantly, but they saw nothing. At least, all of them except Mary.
It was slow, gradual. But something was coming through. As though walking from a long hall, the figure started smaller and smaller, and grew larger as it approached from the other side of the mirror. The girls started to leave, ignoring as Mary stared into the mirror. The figure came faster as the girls left, before it all but crashed against the mirror. A grotesque face pressed against the glass, fingers reaching out suddenly to grasp the young girl's head.
Mary's shrieks filled the air, and her friends rushed in and hit the lights. To them, it appeared as though Mary was just screaming. But to Mary...to Mary it was an entirely different ballpark. To her eyes, the lights were flickering, the face was pushing its way out of the mirror, and those awful, bloody claws were sinking into her skull. Her own reflection was skewered by the figure grasping her, and her own orfices; nose, eyes, ears, mouth--were all leaking blood. It happen so quickly, and the only thing that broke the spell was when Jennifer's parents came in and hauled Mary out of the bathroom.
On the outside, Mary was just fine. But the poor girl seemed to be unblinking while the parents repremanded the girls. That night, Mary didn't sleep. She had trouble speaking, and her friends brushed her off as just hyping it up.
The rest of the changes came after that--Mary became afraid of mirror. Never looking directly into them. She was afraid to close her eyes, because the next night after the slumber party, it was that horrible nightmare again. The apparition's screams echoing her own. She went with less and less sleep, and started taking a liking to darker clothes because loud colors had begun to hurt her tired eyes.
The years ticked by slowly, and it all came to a screeching halt. When Nona and Haggard found their daughter beneath the water of her bathtub, their world almost came crashing down. They didn't believe her when they pulled her to the surface and rushed her to the hospital, that it was an unseen force pinning her beneath the clear water. No, they saw their precious child trying to take away the life that she had been blessed with.
With concern over their daughter's health, and the sombre appearance the girl was taking, her parents brought her to America on a visit, hoping that a change of scenery would fix things. It didn't, however her mother and father fell in love with New York, and decided they would stay. She was enrolled into Baum, where she struggled in her classes to graduate. All the while, she had learned to avoid mirrors the best she could. She became accostomed to the apparition in the mirror, and before it could reach the mirror she turned away.
With difficulty, mary graduated from Baum, and continued her education at Barrie University.
present
Now a sophmore at Baum, Mary is struggling now more than ever. She's a full fledged adult, without mother and father worrying over her. It's a blessing, and a curse at the same time. She wonders if she'll ever be free, have a normal life, and a normal night's rest.
On ocassion, she makes trips to visit the Psychiatrist--because unfortunately the marks that the spirit had been leaving on her body were mistaken for self-mutilation, and after being found in the bathroom with the bloody remnants of a shattered mirror, she was placed on Suicide Watch. Soon, her doctor will be prescribing her medications, but Mary is unsure of how to feel about them. Will it make it worse? Is her mind really creating these delusions? No...because she wasn't crazy. Just tired. She was being haunted, and yet no one wanted to believe her for an instant.

dislikes
-Mirrors and reflective surfaces. She'll take the plastic cutlery, thanks.
-Blood. She doesn't do well with it at all. Blood Drives at school are her own personal hell. Don't even get her started on meat.
-The apparition that haunts her. That's pretty much a given, but it's been making her life horrible.
-Being called names, "Satan's Whore" and "Devil Worshipper" are her faaaavorites.
-Loud sounds and music. She's too tired, so she can be a bit jumpy and prone to headaches.
-Being out of caffeine free soda.
-Public bathrooms. Seriously, you don't need a mirror to pee.
-Bathtubs, and still-water. It's awfully reflective.
other notes Mary has a few scars on her body. Most of them she's managed to cover with tattoos, but there's still a few she hasn't inked over yet. Most of them look like short, angry cuts. Almost like she's clawed herself. She tries to cover them up if she can because people tend to look at her with pity in their eyes. No one believes her when she vehemently denies hurting herself.

book title Bloody Mary
backstory Bloody Mary is an urban legend. No one's entirely sure where it spurred, but it's really quite old and has been going for centuries. Often played at home parties, it involves several different sort of "rituals", but they all lead to one thing. People hoping to see the ghastly, bloody woman in the mirror. Some speculation is that Bloody Mary might be the apparition of Queen Mary I, but...no one's spoken with Bloody Mary quite long enough to find out.
