She could see them clearly. A beautiful, thin girl next to a heavily tattooed young man. Of course they didn't see each other, they were too enthralled in each other's gazes. Her fingers were wrapped around his heavily tattooed ones. The young woman watching tightened her arms a little bit tighter around the small child in her lap. The child was asleep, not making a single sound. She didn't notice her mother clutching her tighter, as though she was the only solid thing in the world.
The tattooed man leaned in to kiss the cherry red lips of the girl with him, and green eyes averted to look away. Though she couldn't resist looking back up after a moment. The slender fingers of the beautiful girl slid into the man's shaggy brown hair, drawing him in closer. And the woman with the child felt her stomach drop. She felt like she wanted to vomit, to cry. And yet, the steady breathing of the toddler in her arms kept her grounded.
This time, she was unable to tear her muddy green eyes away. The couple laughed, and the girl playfully wiped at the man's lips, taking off the lipstick she had left behind. The man had eyes only for the curly haired woman, but there was a jolt to the mother's system. Because the black haired woman glanced over, and caught her eyes.
For a moment, the red haired mother froze. Like a deer caught in the headlights she continued to stare. She watched Jemissa's eyes lower, glancing at Ariel in her arms. Joey shifted, not moving to wake her daughter--but almost like she wanted to protect her from an unseen force.
And as though she never saw anything, Jemissa took Jamie's hand and lead him down the sidewalk. The tattooed man never seeing the red haired woman, or his child in her arms.
