...appearance*
physical... One of the first things you notice about Charity is that you don't really notice her. Aside from her disability, she doesn't dress in any outstanding way nor is her hair in any outstanding color or style. Perhaps one of the most distinctive physical traits about her is the fact that she's tiny. Standing at 4 feet, 3 inches tall, she's often mistaken for a teacher's child spending her time on campus than an actual student. Her hair is dark brownand long - she can't afford to color it or cut it (noneof her family is good wiuth a pair of scissors). and she often wears it down. She doesn't ever wear makeup because she doesn't own any, though her eyes are big and green and in no need of accenting, and her face is pretty clear from acne. She is almost always smiling, though it's soft most of the time.
If you look closer, though, you might see that there are bags under her eyes and she's an odd pale. Her smile is kind of sad, though never forced. Her eyes look tired but still happy with what she's given. Her face is soft like a baby's and she's not short naturally - her bones just haven't been strong enough to grow.
clothing style... Her clothing consists of things her sisters grew out of and things she finds at Goodwill whenever she can afford it. Her sisters had a lot of pastel colored clothing and florals, so that's what she enjoys. She likes skirts and dresses more than pants and will only wear pants if nothing else is clean. The clothes are a little big on her, most of the time, but she's learned that oversized clothing is somewhat in style so she doesn't worry about it. Her clothing always looks nice and maybe a little too formal, though she saves her best for church every sunday. She can always be seen wearing the golden "C" necklace given to her when times were better and her wooden beaded cross bracelet.
defining traits... She walks on crutches, though she tries to look like she's walking strong without them. Charity doesn't want people to pity her because she's very happy with the way things are and the way she's trying to make things be. [/blockquote]
...personal info*
personality... You would think that someone of such a low socio-economic and physical health status would have a beef with the world and grow up to be someone mean and nasty, right? Not to mention the fact that she's the youngest in the poor family. But no, Charity goes against all odds. Well, not ALL the odds. Just a few. What I mean to say is, she's one of the sweetest people alive, in common opinion. So sweet and kind that it's annoying sometimes, and people wonder if she's faking it. But no, she really sees no point in being rude and mean. A stranger drops their books in the hallways; she helps pick them up, no matter how much it hurts. She'll hold the door open for a crowd of people and be the last to walk in in freezing temperatures if it's physically possible for her at the moment.
And she'll do these things for anybody, which means Charity is often taken advantage of. Though she's not naive enough to get herself into a situation with drugs or sex or the like, she fervently believes that everyone has an equal amount of good and bad in them, and it's just the amount that they show that others see. Everyone's equal in the eyes of God, and Charity tries tohas a chance at redemption. In that sense, everyone deserves kindness and politeness, no matter what. She's very giving, even though she doesn't have much to give. Charity would rather have nothing than deny kindness to someone.
Of course, she is a little bit of a perfectionist, making sure everything she gives is exactly what they need and she intended to give, but she never thinks she's given enough. She still has some clothes while people freeze or go nearly nude in some places. She still has a little food when children smaller than her are starving, nevermind the fact that her condition is caused by malnourishment as a baby. The thing is, is that she wants other babies to be nourished and grow up strong and healthy, unlike her. Though she never considers that last part, really, because she hardly ever thinks about herself.
Being kind and sort-of pretty even though you're poor can still count as social brownie points right? Unfortunately, not really. And she's found it hard to make real friends, friends that won't take advantage or her. She's kind of outcast, because her positivity does get a bit sickly sweet after a while, and she never attempts to put on a front. No, this is the way Charity Clarke really is, and she doesn't understand why people don't like her. Though when she thinks this, she usually gets frustrated with herself for being so prideful.
A few other traits include the fact that she scares easily. You could say "boo" suddenly and she would jump. Her cheeks and nose and the tips of her ears turn bright red the few times she gets angry, as if she's cold, which leads people to laugh at her instead of take her frustration seriously. And she doesn't realize that people probably are only nice to her because they pity her.
life until now... The Clarkes never exactly had it easy.
When Emily Deveraux, the young daughter of a rich family, fell in love with Robert Clarke, a member of a much lower class, she didn't expect her family to disapprove. He had a respectable job and made a decent amount of money and
It didn't stop them from getting married.
When it the news was revealed, Emily was disowned by her family, leaving her with nothing. No money, no job, and what the Deveraux house believed to be no future, though she did have her husband. Robert's family had worked for another rich family business since before his grandfather was born, and each son always knew what they were going to do.
It used to be a fine job, and the Clarkes did well for a while, even if it wasn't as well as Emily had been used to.
Emily and Robert stayed together because of the love and determination to make everything they could out of this life, and the one thing they both loved as much as each other was children. Even though they knew they wouldn't be raised in the best house like the one Emily grew up in, or have the nicest things, or go to the nicest private school, they figured that maybe, just maybe, they could grow up to be kind and loving people.
Charity Rosette was the last of the Clarke children, seeing as they ran out of rooms in their house. She was actually more an accident, but the Clarkes considered her a blessing just as her 6 older siblings had been. They live under the belief that everything happens for a reason, and that God loved everybody and would never allow a child to be born unless they were to have a meaningful life. And that's how they raised Charity, to appreciate what you have in life, even if it isn't everything in the world.
Unfortunately, Charity seemed to be one of the only ones who understood that. What she didn't understand was why her slightly older twin siblings, Matt and Jennifer, always stole her food. She never prostested, because she thought that was part of generosity and her parents never found out. She was beginning to get sick and her parents were starting to notice. She broke her bones a lot, and luckily Emily had training as a nurse and could splint them with whatever wood they had. As she grew, though, her legs started to get funny. Soon, she couldn't walk without crutches. They started taking her to the doctor to see what was wrong. The malnutrition with not getting enough food, mixed with the fact that her mother stayed inside after the previous Clarke was born and didn't get nearly enough vitamin D as she should have during pregnancy, led Charity to get rickets. They began treatment, but it was too far gone and something happened that changed the lives of the Clarkes for the worst.
When Charity was nine, one of the owners of the company Robert worked for died, leaving his greedier partner to lower the wages and make the workers' lives miserable. The Clarkes lost the health benefits they had and couldn't afford to take Charity to the hospital anymore. They lost the house and had to move into a shabby apartment with three kids to each of the two bedrooms, leaving Emily and Robert to sleep on the couch. Emily had to also get a job and sometimes, they had to take their children to work because they couldn't afford a babysitter.
Charity didn't know if that condition was fatal or not, but she did know that she didn't want to live the remainder of her life as a cripple. Her family couldn't possibly live with that, especially if she died. So when she was ready to go to high school, she found paperwork at the local free library and applied for scholarships to different boarding schools in the New York City area. Charity knew that she had to make something of herself, and make money to pay for her surgeries and for her family to finally have a slightly better financial life. Because, as much as they would like to believe, not being able to afford food half the time and barely scraping by for rent is not the life such nice people should have.
the present... Charity was accepted to Baum Academy, by some sort of Christmas miracle, because she got the acceptance letter on Christmas Eve, while her family was celebrating. Christmas was pretty much what the Clarkes saved for every year, the only time they spent money on things they didn't exactly need. She was hoping to make more friends than she had at the public school, but really it isn't any different. Some of the kids judge her for being a scholarship kid, she thinks. But it's not their fault. She lives on campus but visits her family often. They are very proud of her, and think what she's doing is the best decision anyone in either of their families ever made.
Charity is still dealing with rickets and will be unable to get her physical education credits because of the condition, but it's not a deterrent; it's a motivator. Honestly, she's grown used to the crutches and jokes about how she might still use them, even when everything is all better. Because she might even do well enough to afford college, and then she could find a way to make money so she can get treatment so she can get a real job. In lieu of medical treatments, she often sits out in the sun whenever it's out and at its highest.
In her free time, she does as much volunteer work for charities as humanly and physically possible. Of course, this means she makes no money, but as long as some money is made for the charity that's not her name, she's happy. She still and probably will always refuse to believe that there is a such thing as pure evil, and will firmly believe that there is good in all people, no matter what.
