How long had it been since Gracie’s mother gave her the boot? Six months? Nearly. It was just after her class started talking about New Year’s resolutions when they came back from Winter Break. Her’s consisted of “get a life” and “stick it to the man.” She laughed about it at first but then ended up crying herself to sleep that very night. She had vivid nightmares of being locked in chains and stuck. Even this one where she was stuck in a huge hourglass! That one was the kicker. As the sand slowly rose up to suffocate her, Gracie realized she really felt like she’d never been actually living her own life. It made her finally quit modeling and refuse to see any more of those shallow rich boys that really only wanted her for two things. (Money and sex, ugh.) She rebelled and never went out to galas or parties. She even stayed after school and didn’t come home til late. It wasn’t until her mother found out about her trying to get a tutoring job did they finally notice.
Her mother was furious and told her to get lost. It hurt at first but after packing everything up and checking into a hotel, she felt free. Of course, the money soon ran out and Gracie learned about consignment stores were she sold all of her designer clothes and bought regular ones. Worn-in jeans and a t-shirt. An old college hoodie. They felt comfortable and soft especially on those nights she snuck into 24 hour stores and slept in the bathrooms. Everything was cut off: her card, her phone, and even her school. She had to drop out. Her parents expected her to come crawling back but she refused. Especially since they allowed her to get legally emancipated last year for “business reasons”. She did have money somewhere but it was gone now. That’s what she got for letting her parents be on her account. She found other ways to get money though. This quaint little restaurant called the Wandering Goose hired her without any food experience! It was nice and she even got a second job at Gingey’s. Gosh, that place was so good.
Both places were middle class so she was only getting minimum wage. Still, that was good because she wouldn’t run into old modeling coworkers. (Gracie could hardly call them friends.) Especially since, she wasn’t exactly the best busgirl.
“Oh shit!” Gracie squeaked as a glass tumbled to the ground and shattered. She looked around at the people staring and turned bright red. “S-sorry!” she whispered and hurried to clean up the mess. Really, it wasn’t that hard but for some reason Gracie couldn’t seem to get the hang of it. She liked hosting better because there was down time. Then she could study for her GED test this fall. One of the workers had told her about it when she explained her story. It was amazing really! All you had to do was take a test and you got a high school diploma... well something close to it. She was sure she’d be able to ace the test as long as she studied hard. That was getting tough though because she worked nearly all the time just to pay rent in her little apartment that she finally managed to afford. It was nice and there was hot water! Oh, she’d missed that way more than any makeup or heel. After rushing to the back a waitress tapped her on the shoulder. “Take drink orders at table 4, I’ve gotten double seated again.” Gracie nodded and scurried over to the table.
“Hello! Welcome to the Wandering Goose, I’m Gracie,” she pointed to her name tagged and wore a warm smile. “I’ll be taking drink orders but Sydney will be your waitress. What can I get you today?”
