personality[/justify][/blockquote]
Despite being the elder of two siblings, Lucas has never been an illustration of the ideal older brother. In fact, with him being constantly reliant on her, Luke's relationship with his younger sister is the inverse of what's expected. Much like a premature child, he thrives off of Marlena's love and guidance, considering her to be of the utmost importance to him; without his beloved sister around, Lucas is lost. Without Marlena next to him, Lucas is empty. He doesn't know what to do with himself without her; years of fraternal closeness have emotionally affixed him to Marlee, generating endearment that borders a weird addiction. Marlena is almost like Lucas' drug in that, like a drug, he needs her to get by. And, like with any good drug, there could be no Hell worse for Lucas than Marlena withdrawal.
Thus, nobody else can have his sister. Excessive dependency on Marlena has bred a sort of unmanageable possessiveness over her, causing Lucas to strive at keeping her from anybody else. It's not necessarily that Luke wants what's best for Marlena, as his interfering father had so fervently– it's not even that he's simply overprotective, as any big brother might be. No, it's more that Lucas feels as though he cannot possibly live without her presence in his life, and therefore will do anything to get rid of anyone who threatens it. Unlike any drug, there is only one of Marlena Cartwright, and Lucas wants her all to himself.
Because, really, how soon would anyone give up something that they required, that they couldn't possibly live without? In Lucas' blind eyes, his want for Marlena goes beyond addiction– it is not a want, but a need. She is the only thing that keeps him stable, as necessary to Lucas as legs are to anyone. Lucas' little sister is the legs upon which he walks. Without them, without her, supporting him, Lucas will collapse, Lucas will shatter. Without Marlena, Lucas thinks, he will surely be nothing; and so, as far as Lucas is concerned, he can never lose Marlena, if only for the sake of himself. As far as he is concerned, Marlee will continue to be Lucas' legs for a good forever, and God help the son of a bitch that thinks to try and take his legs away. He'd like to see anyone even try.
While Lucas seems painfully shy, he doesn't present the social anxiety that usually accompanies timidity. He merely would prefer to keep to himself, being a reserved sort and never one to cause commotion or otherwise call attention to himself. In fact, he's so easygoing and average that you might even forget he's there (not that he would take offense to that). Admittedly, Lucas wouldn't have too much trouble making friends if he so desired them– his good looks don't exactly repel the ladies, either– but he simply doesn't see them as entirely necessary to him; all Lucas needs is his Marlena, and he's plenty content with having just her (so long as she has just him).
Just because Lucas is taciturn and laid-back doesn't mean he's a pushover in the slightest. He has a silent anger, a dangerous quiet like hemotoxic gas that creeps into your blood and curdles it. If he says "back off", you had better listen– unlike many, Lucas isn't a man of empty comments. The motto "actions speak louder than words do" fits him well; if he plans on doing something, he'd much rather show than tell.
Correspondingly, Lucas possesses an impulsive nature that causes him to do things without thinking. He can be tactless, and has a surplus of emotion boiling within him, only waiting for a window through which to be released. Lucas is a bit frustrated, you see? All he wants is to be appreciated by everybody. He feels useless. He feels unwanted. These maggots of self-loathing have wormed their way into his brain and festered there, leaving scars that don't want to go away. But there was always sweet Marlena to soothe those scars, to appreciate him when nobody else could. His anchor to reality, she who has always kept him from further doubting himself. She who eases his mental turmoil and rids him of his emotional pain. She, his Vicodin.
past
Lucas Cartwright had always been a quiet, needy little boy since the day he was born to Macey and Peter Cartwright. As a child, he was smaller than others his age, malleable and clingy as a duckling to its mother. Lucas constantly needed somebody to be around, somebody to take care of him; even in his earliest years, solitude did not suit him. He needed somebody to help him along, when he lacked independence and self-sufficiency (what he would lack throughout and beyond his youth). First, that somebody was his mother– then, she died and little Marlena Cartwright (ironically, her mother's killer) came to be his somebody.
She was born two years after him, but came to be very much his closest friend despite the slight age difference; no, she came to be more than merely Lucas' closest friend. She was his one and only friend, and came to be his everything, his entire world compiled into one girl. True, there were always the amicable peers who Lucas could supposedly call friends; the ones that had sat besides him in classes and leaned over to whisper jokes or spontaneous secrets, though he typically shied away from their offers of camaraderie. There were always those pretty girls that tried to grab his attention, but Luke wanted none of it– he didn't need girls, when he had Marlee, he didn't need friends.
So he never made friends, and he did all that was in his power to keep Marlena from making them herself. He was jealous of all who came close to her, all who even spoke a word to his younger sister– he felt ready to throttle any boy who so much as smiled at her from across the hallway. When they weren't in class, he accompanied her everywhere he could, following Marlee like the hopelessly loyal puppy that he was, and when anyone (especially any dumbshit boy) approached, he was quick to lead her away.
He told her it was for the best, for Marlena– unscrupulous words, stolen from his differently overbearing father. No, Lucas was a selfish bastard, desperate for Marlee to be his and only his, not wanting her to get anywhere near another. He wasn't doing it for her. He was doing it for himself, and as much as he loathed himself for it, he refused to stop. She was his, and nobody else could have her. She was his.
When Peter Cartwright was murdered– barely a short year ago–, his adoring daughter was devastated, sculpted into a different person by death's hands. Lucas dropped out of Barrie University in the midst of his Junior year, feeling it more suitable to find what job he could while his sister continued on with her own education. Anything he could do to help Marlena get through their father's death, Lucas would do. Lucas would do nearly anything for Marlena.
present
Immediately after Peter's death, Marlee moved from her dorm in Barrie to join Lucas in their father's flat, a proximity that Luke no doubt enjoyed. While his sister continued along at Barrie, Lucas instead alternated between various other jobs, settling finally for a temporary existence as a Starbucks barista– though every second that he has to spend working away from Marlena is as lengthy as an eternity, and Lucas was never much a coffee person besides.
Meanwhile, she had found a boy. A handsome boy, toward whom Marlena seemed to have a growing fondness. And Lucas hated him. Passionately, more than Lucas had hated anything before, except for the select few other boys that had somehow, briefly gained his sister's affections before Lucas and their father got involved. And, oh, Lucas planned to get involved just as he always has. Because nobody can have his Marlena. Nobody.

...literature*book title Hamlet
backstory Brother of Ophelia, Laertes was opposed to his sister's romance with Hamlet from the start, though he leaves for France before the opportunity arises to get involved. After Polonius (father of Laertes and Ophelia) is killed during Laertes' absence, the loyal son rushes home to confront the suspected murderer, King Claudius; it is from the King that Laertes learns of the true killer, Hamlet, and it is the King who encourages Laertes to seek vengeance.
Beloved Ophelia's death further enrages Laertes, and he gets into a fight with Hamlet during her funeral, his desire for revenge fueled. Although Hamlet later apologizes, Laertes is steadfast in his resolve to kill his father's killer, and with the aid of King Claudius invents a ploy in which Hamlet is murdered in a fencing match by means of a poisoned sword. However, before Hamlet dies, he stabs Laertes with the same sword, and the two die together after briefly exchanging forgiveness for the Hell they have caused each other.
