On the outside, it's easy to see that Emilee is a pretty girl. She's short, standing at only 5'3", but manages to have a lanky build made of lean muscle from dancing. Her hair is a bit outrageously long (seeing as her aunt has been coming at her with scissors for about seven months now) and, in Emilee's mind, average brown. Nothing special to her. Emilee has big and expressive blue eyes, and her lips are full and pink. But looking at her....those expressive eyes are full of hurt and depression, and sometimes panic. The edges of her lips are almost always pulled down in a pout, and despite the dancing, Emilee tends to slump her shoulders like she's carrying the weight of the world.
clothing style...
(click!!) Usual, everyday, a little "nicer", formal.
Emilee also has a silver bow necklace that her mother gave her when she was little. She wears it at all times...well, except when she loses it. For something she holds so near and dear to her heart, it goes missing quite a bit.
defining traits...
Emilee got a tattoo of an anchor on her wrist. No, not in the typical white girl "i refuse to sink" way. To her, it represents the weight of everything she's been through that's holding her down and putting it on her body in a permanent way lets her cope with the fact that she'll always be tied down by it. Not many people get to see Emilee's personality because, for the most part, Emilee hides from the world. In fact, many people see her hiding behind a camera. Photography is one of Emilee's dwindling number of passions in the world, and she's devoted to it and, frankly, terrified that she'll end up losing interest in it due to her depression. It's the one fighting edge she has against the syndrome, and one of the last remaining reasons her uncle is keeping dosages low. Emilee loves capturing people through a lens and wants a tattoo quoting "a photograph captures the soul". Her aunt and uncle turned their basement into a darkroom for Emilee so she can develop her pictures. It's one of the few places she feels content and at home; if she's at the house and has a panic attack, she'll usually go down there to calm down and feel at peace again.
Emilee is a very closed off, closeted person. She doesn't like letting people in because she's convinced they'll leave her. It's easier to live without making any connections than to lose all of them, right? No one knows that she loves to dance and has dreamed of performing on a large stage but has a crippling fear of crowds and being the center of attention. Some people think she's a mute at school because she never talks in class and doesn't make much of an effort to spread her social wings and fly, ya feel? Emilee is content with being in the back under her own personal rain cloud. It doesn't help that she struggles in school and is terrified of giving a wrong answer in front of the whole class. Teachers learn to stop putting her on the spot or expecting much of anything from her early on in the year.
Emilee is also a bit of a hipster, though she'll furrow her eyebrows and pout if you say that to her face. She follows the three "O"s: Odd, Obscure, and Outlandish. Emilee reads the classics and listens to unsigned bands trying to make it on Myspace and wears Toms a lot. To her, though, she feels like she can connect and identify with the "outcasts" of media society and feels a little betrayed when things become big and famous. The underdogs, downtrodden and wallflowers have to stick together, right?
life until now... Emilee has a history of people leaving her, and that's what has made her who she is today. Everyone left through different means, but they all left the same damage behind without any regards for the girl with the broken smile.
Incident One
When Emilee was six years old, her father walked out on her and her older sister. She had had an ordinary childhood up to then, and her family had been happy. It was out of the blue, and no one expected it. Emilee had been especially close to her daddy, too. She kept asking her mommy and sister, Amanda, "When is daddy coming back from work?". Often times her mom would break down into tears whenever the little six year came pouting with the heartbreaking question. She never received a straight answer either. It wasn't until she was older and bitter over the departure that she found out about her dad's other family and other children in Miami, where he had flown to often for "business". Before he left, Emilee's father had always created a bedtime story every night and tucked her in. It was a routine, something she was used to. Emilee has never liked change, even at a young age. For weeks, she wouldn't be able to fall asleep because her daddy wasn't there to tell a story about Princess Emmy, and still has periods of insomnia to this day.
Incident Two
When Emilee was nine, her puppy died. He was a golden retriever and was hit by a car after Emilee left the front door open. Her mom yelled at her for the rest of the day and told the little girl that it was all her fault. Amanda, even though she was seventeen, pushed Emilee down and said she hated her. Emilee was so confused; why were they attacking her when it was an accident? Emilee had cried for hours in grief while her mother just yelled at her, and looking back, Emilee feels like her mom was just using it as an excuse to let out her anger and can't be too upset about now. But it would still add weight to the snowball that was swiftly gaining momentum to the worst incident of them all.
Incident Three
This instance, there were several people to leave Emilee. After it became apparent that she was her father's child through and through, Emilee's mother made it apparent that she didn't want a reminder of her ex-husband in the house. Emilee began to quietly rebel; she hung out with the "wrong crowd" and got involved in very shady situations. She was around fifteen years old and had reluctantly lost her virginity to a guy at a party (departure #1). Emilee wasn't bothered to make a scene and admit to the fact that she was raped. She still refuses to acknowledge the truth of what went down, possibly as her brain's way of coping and handling the stress of the situation. Emilee had an on-again, off-again boyfriend, Dave, who was seventeen and had a nasty mean streak. He yelled at her and raised his fists, but never hit her. He would call her a whore yet call her the best thing to happen to him. And he would unfortunately be gone so quickly.
One night after a party, Emilee was at Dave's house when she started having severe cramping, dizziness and back pain. She fainted, and Dave took her to the hospital where they found out she had miscarried a baby she didn't even know she was carrying (departure #2). Immediately, Emilee had a panic attack. She had been growing a living thing in her body for several weeks. She could have been a mother. Dave could have been a father. He looked just as panicked as she did. Emilee was taken home, and Dave promptly told her that he wanted nothing to do with her dirty slut self, and that he would never have helped her raise a baby because there was no way in hell it was his (departure #3).
A few weeks afterwords, everyone at school knew and she was the center of attention. Emilee felt sick to her stomach every morning and dreaded walking in that building. She called up her aunt and uncle on her mother's side and asked if she could seek shelter with them. They agreed, and Emilee said goodbye to her mother and sister and left for New York City (departure #4).
the present... Uncle Bill and Aunt Margaret had been unable to have children of their own for years and gladly took Emilee in. As a psychiatrist, Bill knew something was up with Emilee. It wasn't exactly normal for a teenager to want to uproot themselves. Immediately, he began having "therapy" sessions with her, where Emilee would just vent and cry and even have panic attacks. Whatever it was she needed to do to get her feelings across, Bill could handle. He recognized the signs of depression and witnessed several panic attacks and put her on antidepressants right away. He only wanted his niece to recover and live a normal life, and as a psychiatrist, believed in the healing powers of medicine. Emilee hated the way the pills made her feel, though; foggy and out of it, almost like a dead weight. Bill made an exception for her, sense he was able to see her 24/7: As long as Emilee could exhibit signs that she was coping in healthy, normal ways, Bill would keep the dosages low. Emilee agreed, of course, and made her hobby of photography into a full blown passion to show her aunt and uncle that she could remain enthusiastic about something.
Emilee surprised them both when she decided to enroll in Baum Academy for her junior year. It was a hard struggle to convince them to let her go. Bill and Margaret saw the happiness in Emilee's eyes when she was accepted and given the prospect of living on her own and taking care of herself. They couldn't take that light away from her. Bill made yet another deal, and this one has been hard for Emilee to uphold sometimes. As long as she promises to come home every other weekend and go to the nurse everyday to get her medicine (yes, an under-the-tongue check included), they will allow Emilee to attend Baum. So far, Emilee has been a good girl on the coming home part. Every couple of days, though, she'll "forget" to go by the nurse.
To work on her dancing, Emilee often sneaks into the fine arts department after-hours so she doesn't risk running into anyone. She brings an iPod and just feels the music and dances to its story, letting the movement represent the feelings and actions portrayed in the song. A big piano sits in the corner of the room she practices in, and a lot of times Emilee will sit down at the bench and stare at the keys, like she's willing herself to magically learn piano. She once pressed down a few keys, but the deep, projecting sound startled her, and Emilee decided it might attract attention.
other notes... a little too often for her liking, Emilee suffers from panic attacks. [/blockquote]
