...Sienna Clementine Porter*
*You are hopeless, child. You know dat? Completely hopeless.*

...basics*
Sienna Porter is eighteen years old, making her the youngest daughter in the Porter family. To her six sisters, she’s Sie (pronounced ‘see’). To her father, she’s Sienna Clementine; it used to mean she was in trouble but he’s become so exasperated by her, that it’s a habit now. Currently, she’s attending Baum Academy as a senior and working part time at Charming Charlie as a ‘Charmer.’ She says it’s the best job she’s ever had, and it must be to make the half hour drive every other day. Sienna hails from Petoskey, Michigan, where they lived so near the coast that the lake was practically their backyard. Sienna’s never really had luck with the opposite sex, but she still falls hard and fast. If you were to tell Sienna she was the personification of The Little Mermaid, she’d laugh and tell you to get your head checked. She’s been told her celebrity look alike is Jane Levy.

...appearance*
You could spot Sienna in a crowded room by her flyaway red hair. When she was a freshman in high school, she went blonde for awhile; all that did was make her sad and she immediately cut her hair short so the red would grow back sooner. It now hangs just below her shoulders and is very curly; she’ll straighten it if she has the time, but it’s usually just left alone. Her eyes are a very striking blue, another thing easily noticed when first seeing her. For a long time, she wore glasses, but she’s switched to contacts now; she’ll occasionally don the spectacles while reading. One of the last really noticeable things about her is how short she is for an eighteen year old: she’s only five feet and two inches. It might be one of the only things about her appearance that bugs her; it’s hard to get people to take her seriously, especially when she’s angry.
Sienna wears a lot of shorts. It would be safe to assume at least 50% of her wardrobe is shorts and skirts. Her sisters tell her graphic tees are ‘so middle school,’ but she still wears a lot of those, too. Sienna owns a lot of bracelets, most of which come from Hot Topic and Charming Charlie. She shops most often at Urban Outfitters, Wet Seal, and Old Navy. Despite her obvious disdain for swimming and large bodies of water, her father is always buying her every type of bathing suit under the sun. Because of that, she has a lot of bikinis and one pieces shoved in the back of her closet. Sienna would say she doesn’t label her clothing style, but her sisters insist she dresses sort of geeky. When she’s wearing her reading glasses, a Big Bang Theory t-shirt, five bracelets based off different TV shows, and her hair is messily piled on top of her head (pencils stuck in to keep it up), it’s easy to see where her sisters get that.
If you tried to describe Sienna to someone without mentioning her hair, eyes, or sense of fashion, you’d probably gravitate towards ‘that tan girl who looks like she swims all the time but actually doesn’t.’ If you walk by her dorm, you’ll hear her jamming out to songs from the 90’s and early 2000’s. There aren’t very many outstanding things about her. You usually know her by the hair or her surname, or not at all.

...personal info*
Sierra says...
“Being the oldest of my sisters, I’ve obviously had plenty of time to get to know them very well. If you were to have me describe Sienna in one word, I would easily pick curious. My youngest sister has always been the sort to ask every question you’ve ever thought to ask and never did. She wants answers to everything. Sometimes, it’s endearing. I like to answer her as best I can before sending her to Wikipedia or a teacher. Sometimes, it’s annoying. How can she expect me to know how a pencil sharpener is made? I don’t mind so much as long as she keeps it to things I can safely answer.”
Shiloh says...
“If you look in the dictionary for the word hoarder, you’ll find a picture of Sienna. The brat keeps everything: movie tickets, receipts, hair accessories, stuffed animals. It’s ridiculous. It wouldn’t be so frustrating if she didn’t steal my stuff all the time. Like, she’s obsessed with bracelets. She’ll come to Barrie and use the spare key I gave her to get into my dorm to steal my jewelry. I know, I should just take the damn thing away from her. I just don’t get it! You know, she has plenty of bracelets as is! She says it’s one of the most creative ways to keep memories, but I call bullshit on that. Take some damn pictures.”
Saylor says...
“If you plan on going out with my sister, also plan to keep her on a leash. She’s sort of a hopeless romantic and she has a tendency to go along with whatever a guy asks her to do. … Okay, I suppose I’m exaggerating. It’s just that last time she was in a relationship, she fell hard and fast, and he ended up breaking her heart. When she starts to like somebody, she really starts to like them. She’s pretty good at not coming on too strong which is a relief because then she’d be scaring them off. You can tell, though. When she’s got a crush. She hums and twirls around and plays with flowers. It’s pretty cute.”
Scarlett says...
“If you haven’t been told yet that Sienna is spoiled, I’m going to do that first thing. The love our dad has for her is more than his love for the rest of us combined. She gets everything, which I could understand seeing as she’s the youngest, but I didn’t get that treatment when I was the baby of the family. I adore her, I really do, but it seriously pisses me off sometimes. It’s not like she flaunts or abuses it, but she knows. She definitely picks up on it. Despite her tendency to keep things she doesn’t need, she has before donated something she was given but didn’t want. So, yes, she’ll share. Just not often.”
Savannah says...
“I’ve always thought it was really sad how afraid of water Sienna is. It was quite some time ago, but she hasn’t stepped foot in a pool or lake since. It’s a shame that one of the best places to meet boys is also one of the places she refuses to go. Dad isn’t too pleased about it, either; that he still tries to force it on Sienna really gets to her. They won’t go talking for days after she’s stormed off or hung up during a bad phone call. So, please, don’t pull some joke and toss her into a pool. Unless you want to face the wrath of six very angry sisters taking your lunch money to pay for the therapy sessions she’s going to have to go to.”
Skylar says...
“Sienna is extremely adventurous! Growing up in such a small town without much to do, we all sort of grew up with that exploring mindset. Seeing as most everything was in walking distance, we’d take the long and scenic routes to get there. Sienna still does that. She walks or bikes most places (she’s also kind of concerned about the well being of Earth, so there’s that). She’s often dragging whatever friend she can find along with her, whether or not they want to go. Sometimes, her adventures get her into trouble. That’s usually about when she pulls something out of thin air and manages to get home safely.”
Simon says...
“Sienna is my little girl and that she is so rebellious is very discouraging. Wouldn’t get this kind of behavior if we’d had a boy. She hardly listens to a word I say and the majority of requests I make are very quickly shot down. She refused to make the team practices, was always late for family dinners, and she wouldn’t clean out her room of that junk she keeps. It’s exasperating. Still, she reminds me so much of her mother that I can’t help but to go easy on her. It’s pretty difficult to keep an eye on her now that she’s living on campus, but I do my best to keep a lookout.”
life until now...
West Lake Street, Petoskey, Michigan
When Simon and Rose met, they didn’t realize how quickly in love they’d fall. They didn’t know they’d have child after child, and that they would all be girls. They didn’t know a lot of things because they were young and in love and what else mattered but being happy? By the time they’d had their third daughter, they were moved into a large home settled right on the lake’s edge. It might as well have been their backyard. It explains where the girls got their love for swimming, though it’s just as likely it was their father raising them to be swimmers. Elementary, middle, and high school were all in walking distance, as were most shopping centers and places to eat out. It was a lovely community to grow up in, quaint and friendly.
Mackinac Island
One of the things a Porter child is always willing to talk about has to be their trips to Mackinac Island. And it wasn’t just there. They spent every summer visiting various Great Lake islands, swimming whenever they could, staying at cozy inns, and taking pictures at every stop. More often than not, they took the scenic routes, driving along the coast instead of through the state. It was always a lot of fun, all cramming into one vehicle, taking videos of each other, singing loudly to songs on the radio. It was easily their number one way of bonding; you either spend two hours in a car getting along or sitting quietly and awkwardly, and the Porter family was anything but quiet and awkward.
Lucky Number Seven
Sienna Clementine Porter was the seventh and last daughter to join the family. To have so many siblings before her helped immensely as she grew up. There was always someone to turn to if she was upset, to fight with if she needed to vent, to laugh with when she wanted to cry. They all liked different movies and music and so she was introduced to every genre you can name, and more. If she was ever bullied, it didn’t last long. Her teachers knew her and automatically liked her, assuming she’d be just as well-mannered as her sisters. She usually was. It was first grade when her love for swimming surfaced and she learned very quickly. It was a promising sign, how quickly she took to water, and her father happily took her onto the swimming team.
The Porter Piranhas
When you go against this family of swimmers at a meet, you don’t expect the competition to be so fierce. Thing is, their coach is also their father and the last thing you ever want to do is disappoint your father, right? Sienna and her sisters did very well and won most of their races. If they ever lost, it meant weeks more training and their dad tended to be so frustrated that it was… sort of brutal. Despite Sienna’s love for swimming, she had a deep hatred for the practices and the schedules, and she was late more often than not. When her mother died, she quit it completely. At first, her father hadn’t taken her seriously. But when she’d had a panic attack after being forced into the pool, things really changed. And they haven’t exactly been the same since.
Mommy Dearest
It was during one of their trips to Mackinac Island that everything went wrong. It should have been like any other ferry ride over, but when six year old Sienna fell overboard and her mother dived in after her, nobody realized how wrong a turn it would take. While Sienna was safely back on the boat, her mother was wading in the water as they tossed out another life ring buoy. It took only seconds, but… she was hit. Drunken college students out on a jet boat, not watching where they were going. At the speed they were going, she suffered severe head trauma and eventually passed away in the hospital. Since that day, Sienna blames herself for her mother’s death and hasn’t been in any large body of water since. Being too near one sends her into panic attacks.
Baum Academy
Starting at the new school was a sudden and irrational decision. Part of it was that she was extremely uncomfortable living so near the lake, another part was her father seeming to be constantly disappointed in her, and another was finally being fed up with her sisters. By the time she told her family, her application had already been accepted and a train ticket booked. No amount of pleading could stop her. The day before she left, they’d all had to cave and ended up throwing her a going away party. At least her father could be relieved that her older sister, Shiloh, would be out there at Barrie University. She left for New York with an open mind and a heavy heart. Everything was riding on this move and she could only hope that things worked out in her favor.

the present...
Dear Diary,
» My first day on campus was nice. My guide was very helpful, if not a little distracted, and I’ve already met some very kind people. My roommate is out which gives me some quiet time to unpack and think. Thing is, thinking isn’t a good idea. I’ve got too many things on my mind. Normally, this is alright. Because it means I can’t focus on one troubling thing for too long. But all the things on my mind are bad, like what if I fail my classes, or what if my roommate is a raging bitch, or what if I’d never killed mom? … Fuck. Shit. God dam-- forget it.
» Update: my roommate is a raging bitch. My teachers are all patient enough, though, and I’m doing well in class. I joined the Photography and Drama clubs, mostly to have something to do. But since I’ve started, I really do like taking pictures of New York and its inhabitants. And while my acting needs some work, it’s still a lot of fun. The other members are so friendly, it’s almost kind of weird. I guess I’m not used to it.
» I hate Shiloh so much!!!!! I’m her younger sister! You’d fucking imagine that she’d share her things with me! I mean, helllooo, I’ve only been in New York for, like, six months! Would it really kill her to lend me some money?! I can’t get a job yet! I’m not even sixteen! She’s always been so prim and proper and so damn bossy and such an over achiever! Ohmygod, whatever. Here’s hoping she’s out of Barrie by the time I get there.
» Alright so maybe I overreacted a bit last I wrote. It was probably just that I was still a bit torn up over that recent break up. Boys suck. I should really swear off of them. For, like… the rest of my life.
× Sophomore year of Baum. My old roommate ended up switching out or something, so now I’ve got someone new. She’s alright. At least she isn’t a total bitch like the last one. In fact, when we first met, she suggested we go out and then she offered to pay! Yeah, she’s hella cool so far. I’d be A-Okay sticking with her for the rest of our schooling. Oh, I guess classes a bit more difficult, but that’s a given. The teachers are definitely more awful.
× Dad sent a care package. It included three bathing suits, a couple pictures of the lot of them on the lake, some vitamins, a card, and a check for $300. Doesn’t he know that that won’t last long in a place like New York City? I’m sure he’d want me to put it towards schooling, but all I can think of is that antique store I came across last week. It’s calling my name....!
× Sierra came up to New York to visit Shiloh and I. She’s taking classes online and she’s ahead so she decided to take a bit of a road trip. I guess she’s got friends up in Maine. She took us out for dinner and we had a big sleepover at the hotel she stayed at for the night. It was probably the most fun I’ve had in a long time. Things like this make me realize just how much I miss seeing all of my sisters every day. We’ll have to plan more Skype dates.
◊ I’VE GOT A JOB!! I started eleventh grade about two months ago and I turn seventeen in another two months! I’m a barista at Starbucks, which feels like a pretty good place to get started. At the very least, it tests my memory having to remember how to make all of these drinks. I can finally stop mooching off of Shiloh! I can buy my knick-knacks without suffering the stress of knowing I have to pay somebody back! I can buy as many clothes as I want! … Okay, maybe I should also learn a little restraint.
◊ I’m totally freaking out. Senior year is hanging over me like a rain cloud and with it comes college applications and high expectations. Why can’t I just float along for a little bit, saving up my money, until I know what I want to do? It’s not like I’m Saylor who’s already excelling at her psychology major. Skylar’s only a year older than me and she already knows she wants to swim professionally! I guess I like taking pictures? Drama’s been fun these last three years, but could I really get anywhere doing it? I don… ah, I need to get some fresh air.
§ Dad showed up my first day of senior year to congratulate me for ‘spreading my wings’ and doing so well on my own. We were getting along pretty well until he, of course, brought up the swim team. And if I still ‘felt the same’ about it. And I just wanted to scream in his face I’d rather die than ever step foot in a lake or pool again, but it’s not like we need another dead family member because of me!!! And I just fucking wish he’d get that it’s never ever going to happen. … Deep breaths, Sie. Other than that, it’s going well enough. I’m working at Charming Charlie now and I’m still in the photography and drama clubs. All the rooms must’ve been full, because I’m currently without a roommate. Not gonna lie, it’s kind of lonely.

one most prized possession
• On her sixth birthday, her mother gave her the present Sienna had been hoping for. If there was one thing her mother really dedicated her time to, it was mason jars. Each of her daughters had received one representing their personality, their hopes and dreams. When Sienna got hers, she held onto it for hours, admiring the pearls and glitter inside, the bubbles painted on the exterior, the lid decorated as the ocean floor. Sienna keeps it on her bedside table and holds onto it when she’s especially upset.
