Father: Angel Silvestre Martinez Alvarez, Deceased
Mother: Raquel Lucia Delgado Alaya, 45
Sister: Soribel Ana Martinez Delgado, 27
Sister: Mireya Lucia Martinez Delgado, 21
Sister: Damita Pabiola Martinez Delgado, 17
Having to raise four children on your own is never something that comes easily. Raquel was to find that out the hard way, when her husband was suddenly killed by a rogue bullet from a drive-by. That left nine year old Angel Jr. to be the man of the house. With a one, five, nine and eleven year old to be taken care of, there was very little money to spare. Angel gave up many meals for his sisters and found work doing anything he could for neighbors or family friends. It wasn't much, but then, they were better off than some.
Some nights, Junior would be angry and tired from the day's work, and the girls would become discouraged. Raquel would remind her children of how fortunate they really were and lifted their hearts and minds by singing and dancing until their little selves were too tired to stay awake. And whenever Junior and the girls would see Mama becoming sad, or crying for Papi, they would sing for her until she smiled again.
But sometimes, Junior was a naughty boy. "Te va a comer El Cucuy.." The Boogeyman will come to eat you, warned his mother. And Junior, laying awake at night, waited. And waited.
And El Cucuy never came. He was never eaten by the evil monsters under the bed, and he felt himself quite important because of this.
His behaviour became much more mischeivous as he grew. By the time he was ten, his classmates had taken notice of his glinting eyes and malicious smirk. The older boys approached him, and he was soon taken under their wing.
Now, in Mexico (and likely in America as well), there are two types of gangs. There is the type that is connected to a cartel, who smuggles heavy drugs and does a whole lot of damage. There is another type that is a street gang. The members all wear the same colors, have nicknames and talk a lot of smack, but don't cause much harm in general. People sometimes forget though, that these groups are connected.
Junior's older friends lured him into a gang like this. The promises of having another family, protection, and father-like figures was enough to peak the young boy's interest. So at the age of 10, Junior became a look out. By the time he was 13, he was generally accepted into the group. At age fourteen, he was jumped into the gang, and received his first tattoo, marking him as one of them.
He wasn't a terrible kid. He did well in school, when he showed up. He always took care of his mother and siblings. His mother never accepted any money he got from dealing, so Junior took it upon himself to buy food and fix parts of the house.
When Junior was eighteen, he fell in love.
Her name was Marisol Fuentes, and she was everything he could have dreamed of. She made him believe that someday, he could have a better life. That he could do something with it, not sell drugs and terrify the people of Juarez. And it all seemed to be coming true, when Marisol became pregnant.
A son was born and they called him Abejundio, or Bee for short. Everything was perfect.
Until Angel came home one night, to find all the lights off. For some reason, he felt uneasy, which was odd, as he had never feared the dark. He called for Marisol, but there was no answer. Junior turned on the light and found Marisol in a pool of her own blood, craddling Bee in her arms. Marisol had found her son dead (of SIDS, as it were) and rather than live without him, slit her own throat.
So, at twenty years old, Junior took his mother and his sisters and moved to the US. They all worked on getting their green cards and moved around a bit, before finally settling in New York.
the present... what are they doing now? where are they living/working? what is their life like in new york city? how are they doing in school/at work? how are they feeling about their lives? how much or how little do they get out? any pets? friends? lovers? do they live with their parents? if no (or yes), what is their relationship with them right now?
other notes... anything about your character that doesn’t fit anywhere else? [/blockquote]
...literature*
title... Legend: The Boogeyman (or in this case, El Cucuy/El Coco
backstory... In Spain and Latin America, parents sometimes invoke the Coco/Cucuy as a way of discouraging their children from misbehaving; they sing lullabies or tell rhymes warning their children that if they don't obey their parents, el Coco/el Cucuy, a man with a sack or bag will come and get them and then eat them.
It is not the way the Coco looks but what he does that scares most. It is a child eater and a kidnapper; it may immediately devour the child, leaving no trace, or it may spirit the child away to a place of no return, but it only does this to disobedient children. The coca is on the look out for child's misbehavior on the top of the roof, the coco takes the shape of any dark shadow and stays watching. It represents the opposite of the guardian angel and is frequently compared to the devil.
