, how to commune with good ones, and keep out bad ones. Her nephew, who was only three years younger than Ezekiel's parents, also visited from Las Vegas occasionally, and it was he who taught him the art of illusion. Ezekiel grew up loving these two magical things, and kept them as cherished passions and hobbies.
In and out of the Big Apple, there lived a boy who was quite ordinary, but was destined for extraordinary things, though he didn't always know it. His parents had grown up in New Orleans, Lousiana, in the upper class, and had been high school sweethearts, though their love didn't fizzle out as the years went by. they were both twenty-five when they established a non-profit, charitable organization that helped prepare for and deal with the aftereffects of natural disasters. It was the organiation's second year strong when the boy was born, and they named him Ezekiel, for god did strengthen, and Benjamin, for he was a son of the south. His parents, however, were very busy, so a friend of the family cared for the boy while they were away at work. She was a medium, though there were many mediums in new orleans, and she didn't make a lot of money. She had lost her home and moved in with them, for the Mays were kind people and wouldn't leave their friend to live on the streets.
Ezekiel loved Miss Eleanora Rodanthe like she was his own mother, and she loved him like he was her own son. She taught him about the spirits
His parents organization moved headquarters to New York City when he was ten, and Eleanora Rodanthe, whom he had given the nickname 'Ro' to, moved with them. Her nephew stayed behind with his new family and promised to keep in touch, and Ezekiel vowed to learn more magic on his own. New York was very different than New Orleans, and it took some adjusting, but eventually Ezekiel considered the city to be his home away from his hometown. His parents could see him more often. They still owned the house in New Orleans and visited as much as they could. [/blockquote][/blockquote]

HERE TO RELIVE YOUR DARKEST MOMENTS

In 2005, when he was eleven, a terrible storm hit his hometown, one of the most terrible storms anyone had ever seen. His house was halfway in the hurricane they called Katrina, as was most of the beloved city. The government didn't provide much help, so his parents went back to New Orleans while Ezekiel stayed with Ro in their New York apartment for two more years, going to middle school there.
He eventually fell in love with the city and all it held, though it would never hold as much as New Orleans, he grew attached to the city. So when his parents asked him if he wanted to move back to New Orleans when everything settled down a little bit, he declined, and wanted to go to school at Baum Academy. He didn't know why he was drawn there, but it seemed like an excellent school, so his parents paid the tuition and there he went.
During his junior year, he was late for something for the first time in his entire life, and that's how he met Charley Harper in person. They had spoken in a chatroom on the previous night, but this was different. One, he was late for a class, and two, she was actually a lot better in person. They became best friends and stayed that way. Ezekiel made her go to dances in poofy ballgowns and everything was great, at least, it was until the end of his senior year.

& ALL OF THE GHOULS COME OUT TO PLAY
On a stormy night, when he was spending the night at his parent's apartment when they were visiting, he got a call that changed his life forever. It was from a police officer down in New Orleans, where Ro had ben visiting for a few years now since Zeke was living on campus. He said that there had been an accdient, and Eleanora Rodanthe was pronounced dead at the scene.
He pried for more information, but suddenly, the lights went out and also the phones. It was completely dark and Zeke sat there in tears for a few minutes before seeing the glowing light of a wand. Curious, he picked it up, and that was when she appeared. Cinderella's fairy godmother. He was only hesitant to believe what was happening for a few minutes, but he was a believer in magic in ann quantities and forms, so he knew he wasn't going crazy.
Though she tried to help him, Zeke became distant and uncaring and didn't come back for an entire month when he went to New Orleans for the funeral. When he did, he didn't talk to anybody, not even the fairy godmother. After graduation, when he was moving his things out of his dorm, he found a picture of his whole family and got so distraught that he ended up breaking half the lights in Baum with magic, though they assumed he just did something to the fusebox across the hall from his door.
He blocked out the fairy godmother, not caring what she had to think. He blamed her for ever being in this mess in the first place.
and every demon wants his pound of flesh
BUT I LIKE TO KEEP SOME THINGS TO MYSELF
He ran away to Las Vegas to escape charges, and they didn't persue him past juris-dictional lines. He just kind of had enough of New York and New Orleans and needed to find himself a new new city. The first thing he did was get himself a fake I.D., saying he was 21 instead of 18. He didn't look it, but he could usually talk his way out of things.
Zeke made a little bit of a name for himself as a street magician, and was offerred a few contracts for hotels that he declined. He would say because he didn't like anything tying him down, but in reality, he wasn't sure how long he was going to be in Vegas.
No one outside Vegas knew his name, but within the city limits, he was almost a star.
i like to keep my issues drawn
IT'S ALWAYS DARKEST BEFORE THE DAWN
Zeke got himself to yet another bit of trouble. He was low on money and resolved to using slight of hand to get some more. He stole the cash out of wallets and returned them without the victim even blinking an eye. In some cases, he used his wand, but he tried to stay away from that because FG would get stronger every time he used it, and he was trying to keep her away.
One time, however, he had not gotten much sleep the night before (he was with a girl), and was tired but needed a coffee. He was caught trying to steal someone's money and was arrested, held in a cage he couldn't just escape with magic. He tried to use the wand, but it wouldn't do anything.
The fairy godmother appeared and basically gave him the scolding of a century that he couldn't respond to out loud without getting strange looks from the other men in the lockup. She made him promise to try and be better, then used the wand to make the police officers and the man forget the whole thing.
NOW I'VE BEEN A FOOL AND I HAVE BEEN BLIND
i can never leave the past behind
I CAN SEE NO WAY, I CAN SEE NO WAY
That incident made Zeke regret a lot of things he had done. He left Charley behind without a second thought, without even really saying goodbye. He had made a complete ass of himself and he had to make it up to her and everyone.
So he asked the fairy godmother to zap him back to New York City, where he applied to Barrie University and was eventually accepted after just a little magical persuasion. Almost twenty years old, he's starting out as a freshman this year.
And since he's starting out on a better path, he agreed to work off the debt he owed Baum Academy, working out a deal with the Dean. He had to work there for a year, in the library or the office or sponsoring Magic Club since it had nearly died out after he left, and the school wouldn't press charges.
I'M ALWAYS DRAGGING THAT HORSE AROUND
all of his questions, such a mournful sound
TONIGHT I'M GONNA BURY THAT HORSE IN THE GROUND
Now he's just trying to pick up where he left off, trying to reconnect with friends he left behind when he left New York City, though there's one he's avoiding in particular. Though Charley was and still is undoubtably his best friend, he's a little unwilling to confront her again after completely abandoning her. He's afraid that she'll never forgive him, which would probably crush him to pieces.
Zeke doesn't like getting crushed to pieces.
He's also changed a lot in the past year or so, and he knows it. Somewhere deep down, he even knows it's not for the better.
'CAUSE I LIKE TO KEEP MY ISSUES DRAWN
but it's always darkest before the dawn

Ezekiel before Vegas was very different. He was very respectful, and wouldn't hurt a girl if someoe paid him a million dollars. He was always the one to get broken up with, hardly ever the one to break up with someone. Girls usually disliked him because he was so sensitive and wouldn't really move the relationship along as fast as they would like. They also got bored with him and his magic after a while.
Instead of worrying about his own relationship problems, he would often play matchmaker to other people, encouraging them to be with who he thought they would be good with.
He would put everyone else's problems before his own, as if his own issues were not part of the story, of the whole life he was living. Which was true, in a sense, because the fairy godmother was merely in the story to help Cinderella. His whole legacy is giving without recieving, and he upheld that legacy.
But he did ask for a thanks in return, though. He liked respect for what he did for others and gratitude was important to him. He thanked others if they did things for him, after all. Ezekiel hated being taken advantage of, and though he didn't ask for favors in return, he just asked that you not assume he was doing whatever it was for no particular reason.
and i am done with my graceless heart
SO TONIGHT I'M GONNA CUT IT OUT, AND THEN RESTART
Some things are still the same about Zeke. One is that he still does put others before himself, though himself isn't trailing far behind. He'll do something without asking for anything in return, and he's still very punctual. He still loves being a matchmaker and sets up people he knows like it's no big deal. He likes seeing people have a happily ever after. Still flirtatious, he does magic tricks to impress girls, though his intentions are slightly different than before.
Basically he's still the same, but a lot douchier.
The change happened when he left for Vegas, and some things are obvious. For instance, he's turned into quite the heartbreaker, and usually only charms girls for sex, now. He'll flirt with any pretty girl he sees, and he's pretty skilled at it after years of practice. It's unlikely that Zeke'll wake her up before he go-goes, and this leads to the heartbreak because he comes off as if he wants something more, and maybe deep down he does, but right now he doesn't care.
Though, he won't flirt with girls that are just his friends, and he won't flirt with girls that his guy friends are interested in. He's still got some dignity. But if she's available, he'd probably be right there.
He's also not so sensitive, and is likely to dismiss anything as long as it doesn't crawl under his skin. Zeke doesn't get as emotional and bitchy as he used to, but this comes with a sort of apathy that no one ever expected from him.
Though he does care about other people, he's likely to car about them only if they care about him back. He's pretty sworn off unrequited feelings, and will just let go of anything that's not returned. He has excellent control over his emotions, and prides himself in that sense.

F E A R S
* breaking his hands
--- he can't do illusions without them, and he plays with cards when he's bored. he'd probably go crazy if his hands were ever incapacitated.
* losing his wand permanently
--- he loses it on principle sometimes, but he always manages to find it. even so, he doesn't know what would happen if he lost it permanently, and doesn't want to find out.
* not being able to do magic
--- real magic, i mean. the magic with the wand. he's cleaning himself up alright, but he's afraid that if he ever goes off the moral handle again, fairy godmother will leave him for good.
* that charley will hate him
--- she has every right to, but he really hopes she doesn't.
R E G R E T S
- breaking the lights at baum
--- he's paying for that one, and he wishes he never would have done it.
- leaving new york in the first place
--- vegas, fun as it was, was a mistake, and all the booze and theivery makes him feel extremely guilty.
- not staying in las vegas
--- on the other hand, vegas was really fun, and he lived out his dream for a while. but he knows he can go back to living his dream after he repairs what he's broken.

" Short term, I'd say bottom line is that she has to be pretty. Though some conversation is a great bonus, I really don't care that much about talking. And she can't be trashy, or drunk. There, those are my incredible standards.
Long term, however, I'd say she definitely has to be beautiful, and intelligent. I'd want her not just to be amazed by my magic, but for it to inspire her somehow. Maybe if she were a magician herself, that would be nice too. I'd be able to talk to her about everything and she wouldn't judge me, and she could talk to me without me judging her. There's probably a lot more, but I'm not really looking for a long term relationship right now, so there."

so here's to drinks in the dark at the end of my road
AND I'M READY TO SUFFER AND I'M READY TO HOPE
hopes && dreams
+ to go back to vegas and be a famous magician some day
--- this has always been a dream of his, and he only got a little taste of it back in vegas. after college, he would probably consider moving back and becoming a professional entertainer.
+ to get his best friend back
--- he really feels bad about ditching charley, and wants her forgiveness more than anything else gained from living in new york again.
+ to fix what he's broken, completely
--- he's repaying his debts one by one, by rekindling old friendships and working at baum to pay off the lights he broke. he's trying to clean himself up and doing a pretty okay job of it so far.
it's a shot in the dark aimed right at my throat
