Mariana tends to be a bit of an enigma at times. She's hard to define, because she hardly ever lets people in. Yeah, she has friends and she can be close to them but...they don't know her. Mari hasn't told anyone about her past, and this has led to most people being a little put off by her. They like her, but there's always that uneasy feeling of not knowing they get around her. Unfortunately, this mystery woman aura is highly ignored by the Y chromosome. She attracts a lot of attention from males and Mariana has grown to love to play with them. Hookup a few times, lead them on some...then dump them. In her mind, Mariana doesn't have time to actually stick around with someone, and no one's ever been worthy to stick around for. Plus, Mariana is bound and determined to never end up like her mother.

Once Mari sets her mind on something, it's near impossible to get her off that track. She's one of the most determined people you'll ever meet. Resourceful to boot, Mariana has no reservations when doing something to accomplish her goal. Right now, her main goal is getting her sister out of fucking foster care and locking away all the bastards who wronged her instead of take care of her. Like her strong sense of determination, Mariana has a well defined line of what she believes is right or wrong. While it may seem skewed to some people, Mariana tends to not play around with it. If you fall on the "wrong" side, she'll chew you out for it. Mariana is an extremely strong willed person, to say the least.

One of the reasons she's such an enigma is that she's extremely defensive. Mariana takes things to heart right away, whether it's good or bad. You would think that growing up with a psychologically abusive mother would make someone like Mariana stronger, but it did the opposite. She's very easily upset and suffers from panic attacks, which are unfortunately common. Just because she's so sensitive, though, doesn't mean she won't stand up for herself. She'll go off like dynamite on someone, especially if someone mentions her scar in the least bit negative way. She's a real loose cannon.

Cindy Rogers had never planned on being a high school dropout with a whining baby on her hip. In fact, Cindy's life had been set: she would graduate high school as valedictorian, go to Duke and become a doctor, then marry a successful lawyer and have pretty blond babies in a white-picket fence house. That was all shattered, though, when her boyfriend Ray knocked her up. Cindy (who was seventeen) was convinced they loved each other and would be married; she was even willing to put her doctor dream on hold so she could raise their baby and they'd be happy. When Mariana was born, Cindy even gave her daughter Ray's name as her middle name. Cindy's parents were devastated, but were willing to put their feelings aside for the moment; Ray really seemed to be involved with the raising of Mariana.

Well, that is, for the first two months of her life.

After a few months, Ray was out. He had graduated (he was a year older than Cindy) and taken a basketball scholarship across the country in Oregon. Cindy was outraged. Now she had to get a job and figure out how she was going to care for Mariana, who now resembled Ray too much and seemed like a crying money hole. Mariana's first few years of life were okay; Cindy's parents cared for Mariana while the teen mom worked the McDonald's counter and the pole in order to buy diapers and such for the growing girl. It wasn't until Mariana was walking and running about that Cindy began to resent the girl. Of course, she just had to have her father's energy. Of course, she just had to have her father's crooked smile. Cindy put Mariana in kindergarten and quit her job at McDonalds, preferring the money dancing and street-walking offered. When Mariana turned five, Cindy brought another daughter, Bianca, into the world.

Mariana and Bianca bonded instantly. As soon as Mariana was eight and Bianca three, Cindy left the girls in their shabby apartment frequently to work more. Most nights Mariana ate a handful of Cheerios and a bologna sandwich, and would find some softer foods for Bianca. It definitely wasn't easy; Mariana was desperate for a normal life. She wished her mother loved her, wished her mother would care for her like a mom should. Most of all, she wished she had a dad. Maybe then he could swoop in like Superman and save her and Bianca, take them away from mean Cindy.

Unfortunately, Superman never came, and neither did Ray Calhoun. No, Mariana advanced to the age of fifteen with nothing to really set the years apart. It was all a dull blur filled with Mariana taking care of Bianca and shielding her from Cindy's hate. One night, Cindy was in bed sick and needed Mariana to go pick up medicine. Mariana didn't want to go (she only had her permit and was fonder of the laws than her mother was), but Cindy tossed her the keys and said "If you don't go and get it, you might as well leave now and don't come back." Reluctantly, Mariana had climbed into her mother's car and began to navigate the night roads.

She was so close. Just a few more miles and she would be at the store, no big deal. However, it was a big deal. That night, a teenager by the name of Noah Lutts decided to go drunk driving. Mariana drove into an intersection (her light was green), and was hit in the passenger side by Noah, who had been going fifty miles per hour. Noah's engine caught on fire, burning Mariana's arm. She passed out with a broken collar bone, a deep gash in her head and a cracked rib. When she woke up in the hospital a few days later, she was told that the scar would never properly heal. This wasn't the worse news, though: the boy, Noah, had died on impact. Cindy had also been arrested for child abuse and vehicular manslaughter, since Mariana was a minor. Bianca had been put into foster care, and Mariana was given two choices: 1) Go into foster care with no guarantee she'd even be put in the same facility as Bianca, or go to a boarding school in New York City where a distant aunt lived. It broke her heart, but Mariana picked boarding school. She knew that it would do her sister no good to be put in the foster care system, where a child her age wouldn't likely be adopted, and not be able to get Bianca out. No, Mariana was going to go to school, get a job and then take custody of her sister the day she turned eighteen.

Mariana's first few months at Baum were...awkward, to say the least. She was antisocial, and not in a shy, unable to talk to people without throwing up way: Mariana was overly defensive about everything and incredibly standoffish. If someone even asked for her name, she would glare at them and say "screw off". The girl only had one thing on her mind: graduation. When she began to see how fun a true high school existence was, Mariana softened. Now that she didn't have a whore/bitch of a mother looming over her shoulder and a sister to cook for, Mariana could go out and do stuff, could actually have friends. Who said getting a diploma had to be a horrible existence? Mariana joined the cheer squad and let many of her walls down to all the people around her, surprising both herself and her fellow students that Mariana was actually a pretty nice girl, once you got to know her.

Now it's her junior year and Mariana is quite pleased with how the year has gone. She's made it into the in-crowd and her defensive personality makes everyone think of her as some HBIC. It's quite amusing, actually. Now that she's grown accustomed to being outside of her mother's dark shadow, Mariana has found how satisfying it can be to tell someone "no". Just ask all her suitors. Mariana is a bit of a tease, as she enjoys having a fun time with guys, but loves blowing them off even more (and not in the sexual sense). This girl doesn't just play hard to get, she is hard to get.
