Addison Rowe might not have given the time of day to gossiping girls in the hallway, but it didn’t mean she could avoid hearing the latest news.
Apparently, Ezekiel Mays was back. Addison had easily considered him one of her closest friends at Baum Academy, and so when he’d just vanished, it was safe to say she’d been a little upset. She’d heard all the whispers then, too, of lights going out, and had regretted not being at the school due to graduation dinner with her family. Zeke hadn’t spoken a word to her, not to anybody, after he came back from New Orleans. She’d just wanted to help, obviously, even though she didn’t know the grief of losing somebody she considered family.
It was a little strange, graduating and moving from Baum to Barrie, but she got used to it all very quickly. She easily kept in contact with the friends that had decided to also attend college at Barrie, and she did her best to stay in touch with those that had chosen out of state schools. She sometimes wondered about those friends, their schools, their majors; and she certainly wondered what Zeke must’ve been up to. He’d been on the right track to attend Barrie as well, and she oftentimes found herself wondering what school would’ve been like had he been there to study with her or to show her his newest magic tricks (which never ceased to amaze her).
So when she’d heard Ezekiel Mays was back, and attending Barrie University, she’d done some snooping. Part of it was actual-on-purpose listening in on gossip, to find out where he had been, what he’d been doing, etcetera etcetera. Most of it, though, was approaching a staff member and playing the concerned friend to figure out where she could find Zeke. What she had learned hadn’t made her happy; in fact, she was quite angry. When she found him milling about the student center (a building she’d grown to really enjoy), she’d advanced towards him slowly, playing off her irritation until the time was right. “Zeke,
