He was finally going on a date with Sophie Miller. He'd asked her over an Internet chat, completely putting himself out there when it came to being rejected. But hey, it was okay to ask someone out over the Internet, right? As long as you knew them in person beforehand. The whole dumping someone was considered wrong. Yeah, that was it.
Jason Megalos planned on taking Sophie down to Central Park for a nice walk, buy her ice cream. Maybe even take her to a movie afterwards, if the night was still young enough. Yes, it was a perfect plan. It was the perfect plan.
Which was how Jason found himself strolling into Central Park with Sophie, hands tucked carefully into his pockets because he was a wimp and hadn't tried to hold hers yet. Yeah, he was definitely lacking some courage there. Why was it when he needed it, it wasn't there? Way to be, courage. Way to be.
"So, Sophie," Jason started to say, figuring that it'd be best to get a conversation going so that they wouldn't be walking in complete silence. Because really, who liked a quiet first date? "How have classes been?"
How have classes been? Oh, God. Could he be any more of a numbskull? That was a great question to ask on a date.

Sophie was livid.
No, livid wasn't the right word, of course. That meant like, angry, right? And Sophie was quite the opposite of angry. She was super duper happy and excited and... ecstatic! That was the word. Ecstatic.
She told all of her friends about what just happened practically the minute she logged off of the chat after being asked on a date, of all things. Not that she hadn't been asked on dates before, but usually she didn't realize it was a date in that sense instead of just a friendly outing until later, when the boy tried things that wasnt just for friends. Not that she got mad at them, she just got kinda frustrated at herself for being so dumb.
But wait... Jason was her friend, right? What if this was just a friendly outing and she was blowing it was out of proposition or whatever? She literally almost called him just to make sure, but that would have been odd, even for her. She blushed at the thought, to be honest.
It was weird, this worrying about how she acted and the whole blushing thing, simply because Sophie hardly ever acted this way. She just had this dizzy feeling in her stomach, like butterflies. Except of course, she didn't actually have any butterflies in her stomach, because she didn't eat any caterpillars unless someone had fed them to her by accident. Oh man, what if someone had? What if she had actual butterflies in her stomach trying to get out? WHAT IF SHE CRUSHED ONE WITH THE BAGEL SHE HAD FOR BREAKFAST THAT MORNING?
So she had spent most of that morning attempting to look down her throat to see if she could see any of them, but then stopped when she decided they were probably okay and would fly out when she was yawning or something, right? She had butterflies before and they must have flown out at some point. Maybe they were invisible?
Sophie didn't exactly subscribe to logic, but even that was a little bit too strange for her to- Wait, what time was it? Jason was going to be there any minute!
With a stream of curse words (literally words like "barnacles" and "suffering succotash"; she watched a lot of cartoons, okay?), she went into her closet and threw on the outfit she had chosen earlier in the week (another big deal, Sophie never ever planned outifts ever) and waited for Jason to arrive. She couldn't find the cardigan she was going to wear in case it got chilly, but she figured maybe Jason would have a jacket like boys did in the movies, right? And at least she had a scarf and a hat.
It took everything she had not to scream and jump around when she heard the knock on her door, and just to calmly run to the door and open it with a smile.
And whaddya know? She didn't even bring a notebook with her.
ღღღ
Maybe the cardigan was a good idea.
Central Park was her favorite place in New York City ever, which Jason probably knew somehow, but it was a bit chilly out for her liking. Though she shivered a bit, she didn't say anything because she actually did't know what to say, which was totally a first for Sophie Miller.
Those butterflies? They were stull there, flying around in her tummy, and Sophie was worried they wouldn't fly out like she thought. Jason wasn't talking much either, and Sophie was worried it was something she was doing, though she was just kind of walking. There were a few inchworms of distance between them, though, and it wasn't helping her with the whole chilly thing.
Deciding she had enough, she moved closer to Jason and linked her arm around his, grabbins his arm with her other hand. She hadn't noticed his hands in his pocket or that he hadn't tried to hold her hand just because she didn't really know that was supposed to happen. Hand-holding wasn't a big deal to her, it seemed; she was just a bit chilly. If he wanted to now, that would be cool.
Okay, yay for the silence being broken there. "Classes have been awesome, I guess. I have a paper due soon, I think." She didn't even realize how irresponsible she sounded, nor did she really mind. "How are your classes going?" She smiled and tried not to let her teeth chatter, but they did a little bit. No big deal, right? Besides, she was sure there was an ice cream place near here, and it was never too cold for ice cream, so why should it matter if she was cold?

Could this girl have been any cuter? When Jason had picked her up from her dorm, he'd definitely had to look twice at the blonde to make sure that she was truly real. That this whole experience wasn't just a dream, and he wasn't going to wake up in his own bed in a few moments, alone. No, it was real. (He'd even pinched himself to make sure.)
The air was quite chilly, and Jason was starting to worry if perhaps taking Sophie for a walk in the park hadn't been the best idea. She had just a tanktop on, and he could see her shivering, even though she was trying to fight it. Wait, if she was shivering in the cold, would ice cream be a good idea? Maybe hot chocolate instead? Oh, crap. Jason was starting to panic, trying to remember what his brothers had told him years before, advice given for his first ever date.
"If the girl is cold, you offer her your jacket, even if you're cold too. It's better to make her comfortable than yourself."
Right. He was supposed to give Sophie his jacket. Which wasn't such a bad thing, as Jason had a long-sleeved thermal tee on underneath, so he was plenty warm as it was. And hey, maybe the jacket thing would prove better off in the long run? Oh, he was going to hope.
Oh, crap. She'd answered his question and was now asking about his classes. Well, at least his question hadn't been too lame after all. At least, it couldn't be if Sophie was repeating it. But what if she was just trying to humor him, and repeating his lame question back just to make him feel better?
Well, best not to worry about it now. "Umm, my classes are pretty good," Jason replied honestly to the blonde-haired girl besides him, struggling to shrug out of his jacket so he could drape it over Sophie's shoulders. "My professors aren't piling us down with coursework or anything. At least not yet, which I suppose is a positive thing, right?" He had chuckled when she mentioned her paper, because that sounded just like the Sophie he knew and loved -- as a friend. No, Jason was sure that there wasn't any romantic love going on yet.
Was there? Oh, shoot. Now he was nervous again. Finally, though, he'd managed to get his jacket off. Now he could drape it over Sophie's shoulders, be the gentleman so she wasn't cold. Maybe he'd get the courage to hold her hand soon, too. But until then...
"Um, hey, do you want some hot chocolate?"
