Theism
The first thing that struck me about the dark, Asian boy sitting across the lunch table was his radiant neon shirt, with the words “I’m a Jesus Freak” scrawled in bright gold. At the time I harbored a blatant distaste for religion, teetering between atheism and agnosticism. “Jesus freak, eh?” I remarked uncomfortably.
“The dude died for our sins. It says so in John 3:16, 1 and 1 Corinthians 9:6.” He sipped his VitaminWater nonchalantly as if we were discussing the weather. “Oh, and also Revelation 22:3. My bad.”
“And you believe that?” I challenged, startled. “You just believe what this God guy tells you, without questioning him?”
Matt shrugged, nimbly twirling a chopstick between the fingers of his left hand. “I don’t just do what God tells me. I mean, he’s my father. Did you question what your parents told you to do when you were little? When they told you how to read, and write, and ride a bike, and brush your teeth?”
I paused for a minute, thinking. “I guess not,” I finally conceded. “But not everything my parents told me was true. They told me Santa Clause was real, and he’s not.”
He tossed the chopstick into the air and caught it with expert ease. “But Santa still brought you presents, didn’t he? Just like they said he would.”
“Well what does that…” My voice trailed off as I attempted to wrap my mind around what I’d just heard. For once in my life, I was speechless.
He chuckled, as if at some internal joke. “Dude, this sushi’s good. Want some?” And so ended the first of many philosophical lunch discussions between Matt and myself.
Over the next two years, my opinion of religion was wrenched from its ostensibly solid foundation and twisted into an unrecognizable form. Matt didn’t convert me to Christianity. He didn’t make me suddenly realize the flagrant errors of my previous ways. But he did teach me one thing, as I scrambled vainly for comebacks to his blunt, yet poignant statements, and that is that his religion is not blind faith. “The belief in God is not irrational,” he often said. “Just look around you. Look at the laws of physics, the complexity of the tiniest organs and cells, the human brain, the water cycle, and the way that everything naturally restores and renews itself. Systems like that don’t just design themselves.”
I have never met a high school student who had thought through his positions and beliefs so completely. Throughout my elementary and middle school years I had been a strong advocate for the belief that by of the principles of logic and reasoning, God did not exist. What proof did we have that there was a higher power, that the Bible wasn’t just fantasy and fairy tale, that Christians weren’t just blind devotees, grasping at invisible straws? But after countless debates with an eloquent, analytical teenager, I have learned to see the world and its intricate systems and schemes as, through all rational observation, the work of a supreme being. Like a child on Christmas morning, I have learned that I stand among presents to this day, presents that did not create themselves. And whether the gifts have come from Santa Clause or someone else, I need no proof to know that they have arrived.
