DOWN DOWN IN AN EARLIER ROUND S U G A R WE'RE GOING DOWN SWINGING - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - For the past week, Seth had actually been an ideal roommate. He cleaned the entire apartment, right down to dusting the vents. His insomnia was rampant, his energy high. The entire house smelled like cigarettes, bleach, and lemon pledge; his fingers burned by the chemicals that he had cleaned with. He even managed to sneak into Guillermo's room while he was out, and wash that mountain of cloths that had piled up. Dirt bothered Seth, when he got like this.
Seth's rage at Guillermo's presence seemed to have subsided for the moment. Instead, he took on a friendlier persona, with a heavy tone of competition. In no way, shape, or form had he given up trying to take Rose. But he was no longer angry at Guillermo for his interest, knowing that he was in the same boat as Seth himself. They were both caught in Rose's peculair allure. Seth hadn't been kidding when he said they were brothers, though Seth did seem to be liking him a bit more.
But the energy was gone, and Seth was left only with a deep, dank, sweating pit of despair to wallow in. Everything in the world felt hopeless. Rose would never love him, he would never amount to anything, he would be a useless piece of waste for all of his days. He laid in bed all day, staring at his walls, which were decorated with various pictures. Most were of a younger him and Rose, though there were a few of his family. The music on his cheap stereo played a mournful tune quietly, and his blinds were drawn down. A thick cloud of smoke was just above the mattress on the floor.
Rose was evil, though she didn't mean to be. She was pain, she was agony, she was destruction. And there stood Guillermo, with his obvious lead, whisking her away. And Seth? Would be alone for the rest of his life, probably. After another cry, his stomach began to growl impatiently. He didn't want food though. He just wanted to die! He wanted to be left alone, to wallow in his pain. Rolling on his belly, trying to sooth the irksome prodding that came from within it, Seth buried his head into his pillow.
But an hour of sulking, the prodding became too much. Hoisting himself from his mattress, he slumped to the kitchen, eyes rimed red.
What was so great about Guillermo? He was a little taller than Seth, sure. And he did speak Spanish. His hair was nice. IT WASN'T FAIR!

His clothes were... clean. Albeit, they were kinda dumped into a pile on his bed, but they were clean! He was sure he hadn't washed them himself. There were three options. 1. Rose had washed them. He kinda doubted this. 2. The landlord had reported toxic waste. This was more likely than the first. 3. Seth. Now, this one puzzled him. He and Seth had been very civil lately, and actually, Guillermo almost enjoyed having him around. It was like having a.. what did chicks call them..? He thought about his sister's phone conversations. A frenemy? Whatever it was, he was glad that he wasn't living with a complete psychopath. Ever since that kid had shown up, the apartment had looked steadily less and less shabby. So Seth must have washed his clothes. He felt a pang of guilt for the mess he always created. But hey, he was a single guy, who had lived on his own for a while. Sighing, Guillermo dropped the shirt he was holding and crossed the hall, passing the room Seth used. He could hear some somber music issuing from it and he shook his head. Finding Seth in the kitchen, Guillermo grabbed a chair, sitting on the backrest, his feet in the seat. "Hey Seth. Wanna hang tonight? We could do something. I don't know what, but it's better than sitting at home all night. Hell, we could go out and drink if you like." He felt like he sounded odd, but the kid's red eyes told him that he needed something to pull him out of the depressed slump.

DOWN DOWN IN AN EARLIER ROUND S U G A R WE'RE GOING DOWN SWINGING - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - It would seem his Toaster Strudels were gone. Another blow in a already terrible day. Rose must have eaten them. Sex with Guillermo probably drove her to hunger. The images passed through his brain like poison. His rival entered the kitchen, and Seth assumed they were just going to ignore each other. Surprisingly, he was wrong. "Hey Seth. Wanna hang tonight? We could do something. I don't know what, but it's better than sitting at home all night. Hell, we could go out and drink if you like."
Seth stared at him for a moment, his red eyes exaggerating the days permanent scowl. Hang? He was certain Guillermo wanted him to hang, but not necessarily in the manner of company. "You know," His voice sounded husky, dry from crying in his room. He cleared it, trying to make it sound less like he was eating gravel. "You don't have to pretend to be nice to me." It wasn't said aggressively, but more stated in a self-pitying fact. "I know you hate me..."
Was he trying to butter him up? The two had barely spoken since Seth had moved in, and though this more had to do with conflicting schedules, Seth used it as proof of Guillermo's hatred. Grabbing the milk out of the fridge, he tried opened it to drink from the container, finding it empty. Rose had been here? When? Last night? Seth had thought he had heard her giggling, but had passed it off as a dream. He often dreamed of her laughing and smiling. Throwing the empty container into the trash, a bit harder than he had meant to, he shot Guillermo a bitter look. "I see Rose has been here." It was a stupid thing to be irritated about, even through the black cloud of depression Seth had formed, he could see that. But he didn't care.
The anger left him almost instantly, to lethargic to hold on to it. Instead, he busied himself with searching for something to eat. Unfortunately, being that it was an apartment with two bachelors, food that wasn't take out was rare. Neither seemed to have prowess in the kitchen, and Rose certainly wasn't cooking.
Well, at least not for Seth.

Seth glowered at him slightly. "You know, you don't have to pretend to be nice to me. I know you hate me..." Guillermo considered that for a moment. Did he hate Seth? He certainly had when they had first met. Things had changed since then. His dark eyebrows drew together thoughtfully. "Nope. I'm pretty sure I don't hate you. I would have told you a long time ago if I did." He watched as Seth found the milk to be empty, then threw it into the trash with impressive force. He startled at the outburst of anger. "I see Rose has been here." Oh. That.. He sighed. Seth was upset over Rose. And being in one of the depressed moods while pining for a girl, he was going to be quite more sour than usual. Guillermo hated self-pity. It was irritating. He got up, slapping Seth on the back lightly and pushing him towards the bathroom. "Go shower up, kid. Shave, mouthwash, whatever. Tonight you're gonna grow a pair and go out with Rose, just the two of you. You guys haven't spent much time together since you got here. It'll be nice for you guys to catch up."

DOWN DOWN IN AN EARLIER ROUND S U G A R WE'RE GOING DOWN SWINGING - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - "Nope. I'm pretty sure I don't hate you. I would have told you a long time ago if I did." Oh, well that was a comfort. Oh wait, not really, as it was obviously a hue, big, fat, lie. Seth rolled his eyes, only to be soon shuffled out of the kitchen in the direction of the bathroom. "Go shower up, kid. Shave, mouthwash, whatever. Tonight you're gonna grow a pair and go out with Rose, just the two of you. You guys haven't spent much time together since you got here. It'll be nice for you guys to catch up." Seth was perplexed momentarily, before grinding his heels into the carpet, stopping the train of stupid.
"Dude, knock it off." He wasn't in the mood for this, and he definitely didn't want to see Rose right now. The idea of her seeing him like this sent him into a fit of anxiety. He rounded on Guillermo, ego stung. "I don't need a pity push to go and hang out with Rose." Again, his anger passed as he stalked back to the kitchen. Perhaps that was a bit over the line. Emo-dramatic, even? He looked up at Guillermo, twisted between his black mood and sincere contrition. "Sorry." He snapped, a little too loudly. Seth sighed, his voice becoming quieter. "I just... don't want to go out tonight." He wanted to die. Become worm food, so at least he would have some purpose.
Finding nothing to eat, Seth opened a beer, sitting at the table and putting his head down. God, he felt like shit. Did Guillermo see him as so little of a threat that he would allow him to just go out with Rose? How pathetic was he? "You know, just because I'm being cool with you, doesn't mean I'm not still trying for Rose." He said into the table, counting wood grains. "Just so you know. You might not see me as a threat or whatever, but I'm real good at proving people wrong." Sitting up, he pushed the untouched beer to Guillermo, getting up to fetch a new one for himself.

"Dude, knock it off. I don't need a pity push to go and hang out with Rose." Guillermo groaned in frustration while Seth opened the fridge, searching it's contents. "Sorry. I just... don't want to go out tonight." Seth looked horrible. He seemed as if he hadn't slept for days. "God, you know, I don't even know why I care," Guillermo growled, standing and pacing slightly. Seth pulled a beer out of the fridge then sat at the table, his head connecting with the wood with a soft 'thunk'. "You know, just because I'm being cool with you, doesn't mean I'm not still trying for Rose." Seth said sourly, his voice muffled by the close contact with the table. "Just so you know. You might not see me as a threat or whatever, but I'm real good at proving people wrong." Seth got up, pushing his beer towards Guillermo, fetching himself a different one. He felt his temper flare. "I'm sorry, did I miss something here? I think I just offered to let you go hang out with her, even though I'm with her all the time. I think you deserve a fair shake, man. We both care about Rose a lot, so she's got to be the one to choose." He glared briefly at Seth. "But hey, if you'd rather be a pansy ass all the time, then you can forget it. Fair play is out the window."

DOWN DOWN IN AN EARLIER ROUND S U G A R WE'RE GOING DOWN SWINGING - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - "I'm sorry, did I miss something here? I think I just offered to let you go hang out with her, even though I'm with her all the time. I think you deserve a fair shake, man. We both care about Rose a lot, so she's got to be the one to choose." Seth considered this, as he opened a new beer, surprised at Guillermo's sudden temperament change. Can we say mood swings? "But hey, if you'd rather be a pansy ass all the time, then you can forget it. Fair play is out the window." Grabbing two napkins, he went back to the smile, smiling a half apology. It had been the first smile of the day.
"Alright, alright. I get it. I'm being a dick." He lifted Guillermo's beer and put a napkin underneath it, being a severe hater of water marks. "I'm sorry. But can you blame me?" Probably... Seth shrugged, taking a drink before setting his bottle on his own napkin. "You don't find it even a little awkward, living with a guy who is after the same girl as you? I have to say you're being especially calm about it."
He didn't see Seth as a threat. It unsettled Seth, shaking his confidence. But he had gone against worse odds. Before Guillermo, Seth was fighting every Tom, Dick, and Penis who happened to catch Rose's eyes. Now, he only had the one Foe. Foe-friend. Faux friend. He chuckled a little too himself. "I can respect that you want to be cool. Righto man. But what happens when-" He considered his choice of words momentarily, taking another swig. "IF she chooses. Would you really still be able to maintain any sort of friendship with me, if I happened to be the one she wanted?" It was as if he was talking about baseball, with the tone he was using. It was light, more curious than jealous.
"This is, of course, assuming she ever decides. We might just be fooling ourselves to believe, maybe, one day, she'll suddenly shake whatever mental block she has, and decide maybe love isn't just for fools. Or perhaps become a fool herself, depending on how you look at it. You and me, Guillermo-" He indicated both himself and Guillermo, enjoying his little ramble. "We are asking for her to eat our hearts like a couple of apples plucked right out of a tree. One, Two, Munch, Munch." He laughed a little sadly at this, shrugging slightly.
He eyed Guillermo's slender face, eye brows raised. Yes, they could perhaps be friends. But there would always be the undertone of competition. There would always be the elephant in the room. And if Rose did choose, there would be a victor, and there would be a loser.

Seth gave a half-hearted smile and Guillermo slowly grinned back at him. "Alright, alright. I get it. I'm being a dick." "Yeah you are." Guillermo joked, smirking. He lifted Guillermo's beer and put a napkin underneath it. "I'm sorry. But can you blame me?" He pondered this for a moment. He could see lots of reasons in Seth's favor for being a dick. "You don't find it even a little awkward, living with a guy who is after the same girl as you? I have to say you're being especially calm about it." He nodded as if to say, 'Touché'. He couldn't really explain why he felt that way. After all, they were competing. But at the same time, wasn't there an old saying about keeping friends and enemies close? He couldn't decide what category to put Seth in. "I can respect that you want to be cool. Righto man. But what happens when- IF she chooses. Would you really still be able to maintain any sort of friendship with me, if I happened to be the one she wanted?" He thought hard. It would break his heart, to be sure. but would he really be angry at Seth for loving her? He couldn't be, it would be hypocritical. "If you're really who she wants and loves, then yes," he decided, saying it more to himself than Seth, "What else could I do? I can't force her to love me. Yet, now that you've brought it up, would YOU ever be able to forgive ME if I was the one she picked?" "This is, of course, assuming she ever decides. We might just be fooling ourselves to believe, maybe, one day, she'll suddenly shake whatever mental block she has, and decide maybe love isn't just for fools. Or perhaps become a fool herself, depending on how you look at it. You and me, Guillermo-" He indicated both himself and Guillermo. "We are asking for her to eat our hearts like a couple of apples plucked right out of a tree. One, Two, Munch, Munch." Seth laughed humorlessly, shrugging. Guillermo nodded, silently agreeing. He leaned forwards, staring into his can, seeming focused. "She's worth it though. Isn't she?" He looked up at Seth, his dark eyes connecting with Seth's pale ones.

Seth chuckled at Guillermo's nobility, shaking his head. "Man, listen to yourself." Seth smiled a little, but he was being serious. "Think about what your saying, and quit being a noble nice guy. You would be able to watch Rose kiss me, or FUCK IT, anyone? Watch her snuggle, flirt, make little innuendos, being led into another room for..." He let Guillermo fill in the blank. Wasn't like there was a chance of him talking about scrabble. "We're not talking about forgiveness here. Hell, if she chose you, course I could forgive you. S'not the question though. The question is would you be able to stay friends. Could you, knowing that I, or any other bloke, was in the coveted 'Rose's Boyfriend position' stand to watch them be happy together? Could you be friends with anyone who was in that spot, without thinking of everything that he is getting, and you are not. Picturing them holding hands, kissing, her sighing his name?" The hypothetical air of the topic made it more comfortable to Seth. Considerably less awkward. "Admit it. The first time you saw me, not knowing I was after her, you were picturing me get punched right in the wiener by a midget."
Guillermo seemed lost in his head, and Seth understood it. It was the spell of Rose. "She's worth it though. Isn't she?"
Seth smirked, raising his shoulders. "Is she worth sleepless nights, emotional torture, tight throat rivalries, homicidal fantasies..." Seth chuckled jokingly. "Absolutely. Which, makes us, suckers my good friend."
Seth raised his bottle, clanking it gently with Guillermo's. "I'll be honest, Bro, if you weren't trying to steal my girl, I'd think you were fucking awesome. That said, I'd say your alright at the moment. Pretty cool... I see why she likes you." He laughed again, feeling his depressed mood lift a little. But if you won... I don't know. It's not really something I could plan. I don't even know how I'd be around her."

He saw the logic, to be sure. He couldn't say that he wouldn't be angry or jealous. But because he loved her, he wanted her to be happy. He couldn't ignore the growl of jealousy that always threatened to surface when Rose and Seth hung out, so much more connected than he and Rose were. "Admit it. The first time you saw me, not knowing I was after her, you were picturing me get punched right in the wiener by a midget." Guillermo grinned at the memory. "Can't argue with that." Seth smirked, raising his shoulders. "Is she worth sleepless nights, emotional torture, tight throat rivalries, homicidal fantasies... Absolutely. Which, makes us, suckers my good friend." Guillermo let out a small laugh. It was so true. Seth raised his bottle, clanking it gently with Guillermo's. Then he scoffed. "You'd be around her, Seth. You'll always be around her. You're her best friend." Guillermo shook his head with a forced smile, "And I'm just the fuck buddy. You know it, she knows it, and I know it, despite how much I wish it weren't true."

You'll always be around her. You're her best friend. And I'm just the fuck buddy. You know it, she knows it, and I know it, despite how much I wish it weren't true." Seth felt a little guilty, about the comment he had made about Guillermo just being the guy she was fucking.
Taking a large drink of beer, he gave a stern look at Guillermo. "Are you kidding me? Do you have any idea what 'Childhood Best friend' is short for?" Seth rubbed the back of his neck, looking at Guillermo with every seriousness in his body. "Let me tell you a story. It was Rose's twelfth birthday, right? Her Dad made some bad investments, so she didn't get any presents or anything, so I went to the nines. Got her a cupcake, made her a swing on the roof. And she loved it. You should have seen her, it was the greatest. We stayed up there all day, me just pushing her on this piece of shit swing I made out of a piece of my head board and some rope I found. And when it came time to make a wish on the little pink cupcake, she thought hard and blew out the candle." Seth took another drink, as if to lubricate this story a bit. "And because she was so focused, I asked her what she wished for. And you know what she said. She said: 'I wished for my first kiss to be perfect', isn't that just the damn sweetest thing you've ever heard of?"
Seth laughed, a little sad, but continuing the story. "Well me, being the fucktard that I am, thought she was coming on to me. So BAM, I kissed her, right there. And she punched me in the face." Draining the last of his beer, he tossed it in the recycling and went to grab a new one. "Started screaming at me for ruining her first kiss, shit like that. I told her I was sorry, that I thought she meant me. Sure as shit, she wasn't mad anymore. She started to laugh. And she said: 'Foxy, I love you man, but you're like my Brother. And, you know, eww.'" Seth sat back down, popping the cap, looking at Guillermo deeply. "You on the other hand my friend, not only can speak to her in the language she prefers, but you get to do it DURING sex, so don't go whining about only being the fuck buddy. I'd kill to be the fuck buddy."
He grinned at his own as-a-matter-of-fact tone, despite the truth in it. "But, I suppose your situation has it's down side too. She thinks you lot have this mutual, platonic, bang buddy routine. I get greedy, she thinks I'm a clingy friend, you get greedy she thinks your going to go all Fatal Attraction on her." Sighing, he stared at his beer. It's all about her picking the poison though, ain't it. She's the queen of her world."

Seth took a large swig of his drink before glowering at him. "Are you kidding me? Do you have any idea what 'Childhood Best friend' is short for?" He shrugged and Seth stared at him, his features serious. "Let me tell you a story. It was Rose's twelfth birthday, right? Her Dad made some bad investments, so she didn't get any presents or anything, so I went to the nines. Got her a cupcake, made her a swing on the roof. And she loved it. And when it came time to make a wish on the little pink cupcake, she thought hard and blew out the candle." Guillermo watched the scene lay out in his head jealously as Seth took another drink. "And because she was so focused, I asked her what she wished for. And you know what she said. She said: 'I wished for my first kiss to be perfect', isn't that just the damn sweetest thing you've ever heard of?" Guillermo smiled in spite of himself, thinking of the bright innocent smile on her face. Seth laughed sadly, but continued the story, getting up to grab a new beer. "Well me, being the fucktard that I am, thought she was coming on to me. So BAM, I kissed her, right there. And she punched me in the face. Started screaming at me for ruining her first kiss, shit like that. I told her I was sorry, that I thought she meant me. Sure as shit, she wasn't mad anymore. She started to laugh. And she said: 'Foxy, I love you man, but you're like my Brother. And, you know, eww.'" Guillermo couldn't help but laugh at the idea of a scrawny Seth getting wailed on by little Rose, then having her forgive him and laugh not even ten seconds after. Seth sat back down, opening the bottle and glancing at him. "You on the other hand my friend, not only can speak to her in the language she prefers, but you get to do it DURING sex, so don't go whining about only being the fuck buddy. I'd kill to be the fuck buddy." This brought up mental images and memories that he decided were better left to himself. He grimaced at Seth's comment his insides twisting with jealousy and anger. He was surprised at how easy it was to become angry at Seth, yet just as suddenly as the anger started, it stopped. Guillermo raised an eyebrow. "Maybe you should look into learning Spanish. From being around Rose and I, you'd think you would pick up on it after a while." "But,I suppose your situation has it's down side too. She thinks you lot have this mutual, platonic, bang buddy routine. I get greedy, she thinks I'm a clingy friend, you get clingy she thinks your going to go all Fatal Attraction on her. It's all about her picking the poison though, ain't it. She's the queen of her world." "See, that's why you're still around. She loves you. Although it may not be in the way you hope, or perhaps she even THINKS it's a platonic love, she still cares enough to want to keep you around. I'm a toy. That's how this started out, and that's how it will most likely end. She'll get bored."

Seth laughed at this, ignoring the truly pathetic feeling of getting love tips from his rival, and rolling his eyes. "I can barely speak English... besides, she'd probably hit me for botching the language." Seth shrugged, accepting the slightly upper hand as Guillermo considered his own situation.
"See, that's why you're still around. She loves you. Although it may not be in the way you hope, or perhaps she even THINKS it's a platonic love, she still cares enough to want to keep you around. I'm a toy. That's how this started out, and that's how it will most likely end. She'll get bored." Again, Seth felt a little guilty. It had been he that told Guillermo she'd get bored soon.
Seth gripped his beer, not exactly wanting to encourage his rival, but not wanting his friend to feel bummed. Fuck, this was getting complicated. "Listen, I'mma be one hundred percent honest right now. I'd love for her to get bored with you. Every time you two hang out, I beg for it.... no offense." He gave Guillermo a sheepish shrug, as if it was out of his hands. "But... Well... alright. Rose has the attention span of a gold fish with am-fucking-nesia. When she'd meet guys, she saw them once, twice, three times if they were the luckiest god damn bastards on the planet."
Seth gripped his beer tightly, jealousy stinging him. "Now, she claims it's a matter of convenience. You being right next door and all. Easy access, doesn't have to get bozos to buy her drinks at the bar... which she hates..." He took a drink, staring at it closely. "But, if this was the case, why would she have let you go with her on Thanksgiving? Why does she let you hang around the shop? Why does she like the fact that her Uncle likes you so much? And by the way, fuck you..." Seth smiled, pointing and Guillermo in play accusation. "He hates me. I mean, she's amazing, don't get me wrong. But God forgot to add some patience in that girl or something, because if she thinks something is wrong, she's the first one to say something."
Seth looked at Guillermo's beer, eyebrows knitting. "This ain't a wine tasting man, you don't got a sip. Fuck, make me feel like a damn lush." He smiled, taking another drink.

Seth laughed at this, rolling his eyes. "I can barely speak English... besides, she'd probably hit me for botching the language." Seth seemed to teeter on the edge of speaking for a moment, before he allowed himself to talk. "Listen, I'mma be one hundred percent honest right now. I'd love for her to get bored with you. Every time you two hang out, I beg for it.... no offense." He gave Guillermo a sheepish shrug, as if it was out of his hands. Guillermo shrugged back, telling him it was the generally expected response. "But... Well... alright. Rose has the attention span of a gold fish with am-fucking-nesia. When she'd meet guys, she saw them once, twice, three times if they were the luckiest god damn bastards on the planet. Now, she claims it's a matter of convenience. You being right next door and all. Easy access, doesn't have to get bozos to buy her drinks at the bar... which she hates..." He nodded, feeling a bit frustrated with the repetition of the ways Rose some-what used him. Not that she was USING him. Just that her motives were in plain sight and so were his. Well, his old motives at least. But God forgot to add some patience in that girl or something, because if she thinks something is wrong, she's the first one to say something." He shrugged, feeling a bit skeptical, but pleased all the same. Maybe he and Rose were at least friends. Seth frowned at the drink in Guillermo's hand. "This ain't a wine tasting man, you don't got a sip. Fuck, make me feel like a damn lush." Guillermo gave an apologetic smile. "Sorry. I'm more of a tequila guy."

DOWN DOWN IN AN EARLIER ROUND S U G A R WE'RE GOING DOWN SWINGING - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - "Sorry. I'm more of a tequila guy."
Seth was on his feet instantly, grabbing the bottle of tequila out of the freezer. "Ask and you shall receive, my friend." Grabbing every shot glass out of the cupboard, Seth lined them up on the table. "I'm thinking: We're both kind of boned in the realms of love, might as well get shitfaced." Pouring five shots, he put them in front of Guillermo, before pouring his own.
It would be, like, a bonding experience. They'd shoot the shit, trade stories, learn valuable lessons about one another. It would be cool. Nothing could possibly go wrong, what, with two rivals getting faced on anger inducing liquor. Sitting down in his seat, he looked at his golden liquid grinning. "Cheers. To Rose." Seth said, raising his glass and downing it wholly, his face contorting slightly.
He was more of a whiskey man himself. It was the Irish in him. But Seth would often joke that alcohol was his drink of choice, giving very little qualms about what it was that he drank. Anything but Vodka, which had never agreed with him. Setting the glass down upside down, he smirked as he downed another, making it apparent that he wasn't going kidding about getting smashed. It probably didn't help that their was no food in the house, and there fore they did not eat anything that day.
"You're alright, you know that? Like, I wasn't kidding that I'd think you were awesome." Seth grinned, happy to be out of his slump. "Like, you should hate me. I was... kind of...an asshole when we met. And you did only invite me here so that I wouldn't be living with Rose... But I'm glad you did. That thing with leaving empty milk jugs in the fridge... Drives me fucking crazy." Downing another, he stacked the glasses like tower, none dripping any liquid.
